Barack and Michelle Obama are ready for the big release of their production company’s first film. The film will be released on Netflix and is titled “American Factory.” The film explores the economy of the United States’ heartland.
The Obamas’ film, for the most part, profiles a factory in Ohio. The film has been described in reviews as being “anti-Trump.”
During Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign he promised to fix trade issues and the loss of manufacturing jobs. Since moving into the Oval Office, Trump has created a trade war with China that has wreaked havoc on farmers and manufacturers in America’s heartland and beyond.
Trump has repeatedly pushed for stronger tariffs and trade protections for decades now. He even singled out America’s trade partners that he claimed were “ripping off and hurting: American workers.
Back in 2016 President Obama famously stated that certain jobs in the manufacturing sector are “just not going to come back.”
The film charts a “Midwestern rust belt community’s journey from optimism about the plant’s reopening and bringing back vital jobs to a deep anger and disillusionment as the Chinese management imposes its strict, exhausting demands on workers and fires those who do not comply.”
The film focuses on both American and Chinese workers, from blue-collar to management.
Michelle Obama has stated that the film resonated with her because her father had done an intense, hardworking job for decades just to provide for his family.
The filmmakers set out to understand what that rivalry looks like on a human level. They were granted extraordinary access by Fuyao founder and chairman Cao Dewang, who states that he is interested in bridging the cultural divide and showcasing Chinese capitalism as making a profit.
In the new documentary’s early scenes, viewers will see a genuine attempt by the US and Chinese workers to bond with their new colleagues, including fishing and shooting lessons and shared Thanksgiving dinners.
Things change when the Chinese owners become alarmed by heavy financial losses and fire the American middle managers and increasingly invoke their Chinese replacements. This situation created a workforce that was greatly divided.
The Obamas signed a deal with Netflix to produce documentaries and other shows for the streaming company back in 2018.
Barack Obama stated back in 2018 that their Netflix projects would focus on “training the next generation of leaders.”
“I continue to believe that if we are hearing each other’s stories and recognizing ourselves in each other, then our democracy works,” he said.
“American Factory” will debut on Netflix on August 21st.
