Jeffrey Epstein was found hanged Saturday morning in his jail cell.
Reportedly the billionaire pedophile was discovered in cardiac arrest shortly before 7 am in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan. He was transported to the New York Downtown Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Metropolitan Correctional Center has stated that an investigation into Epstein’s death has been opened by the FBI and the Department of Justice.
Epstein, 66, was awaiting trial on several charges including conspiracy and sex trafficking. He was being held without bond at the high-security complex.
Epstein had many high-profile friends including Donald Trump, Prince Andrew, and former President Bill Clinton. He was arrested back in July and accused of arranging sex with dozens of underage girls between 2002 and 2005.
Just two weeks ago Epstein had been hospitalized for what was believed to have been a suicide attempt. On July 24 he was taken to the hospital under police guard when he was discovered semi-conscious on his cell floor in the fetal position.
He was treated and returned to his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center a few hours later. It is still unclear if Epstein attempted suicide or if he was attacked in his cell.
Epstein was put under a suicide watch. The watch had been lifted shortly before he was discovered in his cell on Saturday morning.
Attorney General William Barr expressed outrage at the news of Epstein’s death. He has vowed to look into the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death.
‘Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered,’ Barr said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter shortly after news of the billionaire’s death broke, stating: ‘We need answers. Lots of them’.
2020 Presidential hopefuls Amy Klobuchar and Kirsten Gillibrand have also demanded transparency relating to the details of Epstein’s death.
