On Wednesday, Sen. John Kennedy attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi while speaking at a MAGA rally in Louisianna. With Trump standing beside him, Kennedy stated that it “must suck” to be as “dumb” as her.
“In three short years, President Trump has doubled the growth in the greatest economy in all of human history. And do you know what our Democratic friends have done for him?” Kennedy asked. “Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to impeach him.”
“I don’t mean any disrespect, but it must suck to be that dumb,” Kennedy added, prompting widespread laughs from the crowd and grinning from President Trump.
Kennedy’s statements come as Democrats quickly move forward with their impeachment inquiry into Trump and his dealings with Ukraine. Pelosi announced the launch of the formal impeachment inquiry back in September. At the heart of the inquiry is a whistleblower complaint that accuses Trump of pressuring Ukraine into opening an investigation into Trump’s political rival, Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Trump wanted Ukraine to look into unfounded allegations of corruption.
Democrats are looking into whether Trump withheld nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine to force officials to open an investigation into the Biden family.
On Monday the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Gordon Sondland, acknowledged that Trump’s dealings with Ukraine involved a quid pro quo.
Trump and his allies have repeatedly attacked the impeachment inquiry calling the process a “joke” and a “political vendetta.”
Pelosi has defended the impeachment inquiry. Just last week she stated that the probe is not about Trump’s personality or policies.
“That’s for the election. This is about the Constitution. This is about defending our democracy,” Pelosi stated.
Democratic representatives took great offense to Kennedy’s statements.
“He plays to the crowd. I guess when you stand next to Donald Trump and you have that kind of crowd reaction, you play to it. I’m disappointed. For him to say that about Nancy Pelosi is so off the mark,” Sen. Sherrod Brown stated on CNN’s “New Day.”
“I’m disappointed because I like John, and for him to say that about Nancy Pelosi is so off the mark,” tweeted CNN producer Alli Hedges Maser. “@SenSherrodBrown responds to Sen. John Kennedy calling @SpeakerPelosi “dumb.” “He plays to the crowd, I guess when you stand next to Donald Trump…”
