Cosimo Cavallaro is a Canadian born artist, who now resides in Los Angeles. He is currently working on a cheesy piece of art that makes a grate jab at Donald Trump and his obsession with the border wall.
Cavallaro is well known in the art world for his passion and creativity. Some of his past works include a hotel room covered in 1,000 pounds of melted mozzarella cheese and a 6-foot-tall milk chocolate sculpture of Jesus.
His latest project is a 6-foot-high, 3-foot-wide wall of expired cheese. The cheese wall is located in southeastern San Diego County, mere meters from the actual metal border barrier. Cavallaro states that it is his goal to extend the wall 1,000 feet at an estimated cost of $300,000. His project is meant to mock and grate on the nerves of Donald Trump.
“To spend all this money to keep dividing the countries, I think is a waste,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “You see the waste in my wall, but you can’t see the waste in [Trump’s] $10 billion wall, which in time will be removed?”
“A cheese wall is something I’ve wanted to do for 20 years,” Cavallaro said, “When you come to a barrier or a boundary, you want to expand beyond it. Trump’s demand gave me a context for this, the emotional impact,”
Cavallaro began construction of the wall almost two weeks ago. He’s created videos to share and document his progress.
According to the website, that Cavallaro created for the project, he began the cheese wall with enough funds to create a 23-foot long wall created with 200 blocks of spoiled cotija cheese. Cavallaro says that he works with perishable materials such as food to underscore “fleeting and decadent nature” of humankind.
Each of the cheese blocks cost $100. In order to complete his mission, he has created a GoFundMe campaign. So far he has raised $4,700 of his $300,000 goal. He is also selling merchandise, which includes a “Make America Grate Again” t-shirt.
“The simplicity of the wall is that it shows and exposes the waste,” Cavallaro shares in a promotional video. “I don’t like walls. So, this is a wall that I can handle. This is a wall that I’m willing to live with. Because this wall is perishable – it will not last. You take a piece of cheese, and after a certain date, you have to throw it out. I don’t know why. Maybe that’s part of the whole system of Congress. You must waste cheese to keep making cheese here.”
There is no denying that Cavallaro makes a strong and valid point about waste and the wall. Trump has been demanding $8 billion from different sources to build his vision of a border wall. In reality, it will cost much more. In fact, erecting the wall is likely to cost upwards toward $28 billion, followed by $48.3 billion in maintenance expenses over just the first decade.
All of that money poured into a wall that won’t change a thing. Illegal immigrants will find a way into America no matter what Trump puts in their way. Plus, think about all the private property that would have to be seized to complete Trump’s wall.
Cavallaro says that he would like to keep the wall going but admits there is the possibility it may fall apart or animals might eat parts of it, but that, to him, is part of the artistic process.
“That’s what humans do,” he explained. “We consume, and then we waste. I just hope the cheese wall feeds you in another way.”
