The new national tree was planted by the National Park Service It is a 30-foot Colorado blue spruce from Pennsylvania. The old tree was damaged not long after the lighting ceremony took place. The tree was damaged when an individual managed to get behind the curtain of lights and climbed the trees delicate limbs.
After a struggle, local police were able to get the climber out of the tree. Reportedly the climber was under emotional distress” and was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation.
The climber caused so much damage and distress to the tree that had been there since 2012 that it had to be replaced.

The cost of lighting up this year’s Christmas tree has also grown substantially. The federal documents reveal that the total cost for this year comes to $180,633 up from last year’s total of $141,944. The price cost between 2017 and 2018 was small. The big cost differences in 2018 and this year are management services, which accounted for the majority of the expenses. The other expenses connected to the tree include sound system rental and ballistic glass used to protect the First Family.
The documents do not show a reason for the $40k increase undertaken this year.
