On Tuesday a federal grand jury indicted Todd Chrisley the star of “Chrisley Knows Best” on tax evasion and other charges.
The 12-count indictment was issued against the Todd Chrisley and his wife Julie. Charges against the duo includes wire fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States, shared U.S. attorney Byung J. BJay” Pak.
On Tuesday in an email, a representative for the Chrisley’s, Allen Mayer, stated that he had not yet seen the indictment and could not comment.
Todd Chrisley used Instagram to deny any wrongdoing. He said he was aware that he and his wife were going to be named in a federal indictment for tax evasion “and probably a bunch of other financial crimes as well.”
In his post, Chrisley said the charges stem from a dispute with an unidentified former employee who he said was fired after the Chrisley’s discovered in 2012 that he was stealing from them. The former employee then retaliated by bringing phony documents to the U.S. attorney’s office and told prosecutors the Chrisleys had committed financial crimes, Chrisley wrote.
“I’m telling you all this now because we have nothing to hide and have done nothing to be ashamed of,” he wrote. “Not only do we know we’ve done nothing wrong, but we’ve got a ton of hard evidence and a bunch of corroborating witnesses that proves it.”
Peter Tarantino, the accountant who has been charged in the indictment with conspiracy to defraud the United States and aiding the filing of a false tax return has given no comment on the charges.
The Chrisley’s reality show follows the antics of the close-knit family, who resides in Tennessee. The series has aired on the USA Network for seven seasons and has a new spinoff “Growing Up Chrisley” starring Todd and Julie’s children Chase and Savannah, who make the big move to Los Angeles. Todd Chrisley was also the host of the TV talk show “According to Chrisley.” Todd and Julie also have a podcast called “Chrisley Confessions.”
The family currently lives in Tennessee, but the charges stem from a time period when they resided in Atlanta, Georgia.
Back in 2017, Todd Chrisley was under a state investigation for failing to pay income taxes for an undisclosed number of years. Documents showed that Chrisley’s eldest son, Kyle, who lives in Georgia and is estranged from his father was subpoenaed.
“He’s always been that way. He stretches the truth,” Kyle Chrisley said at the time. “I think he’s trying to hide money,” Kyle said. “He doesn’t like to pay what he owes.”
After sparring with his dad about prior drug use, and a bitter custody battle for his toddler, Kyle said his life is now on track, and he’s cut all ties with his famous family.
“I think it is my dad’s reality,” Kyle said back in 2017. “He believes that he has millions of dollars.”
“When you grow up not having money, and then when you finally get some, I don’t think you want to give it to anyone,” Kyle responded. “I’d like to see him held accountable.”
