According to a report from The New York Times, Burisma Holdings, the Ukranian gas company where Joe Biden’s son, Hunter sat on the board of directors was hacked by hackers from Russia’s military intelligence unit.
The Times reports that Russian military intelligence, as well as “Fancy Bear” hackers, targeted several Ukranian companies back in November. The hacking was done using a phishing campaign, which collected passwords as well as usernames of employees in order to breach the systems. The hackings were detected by a Silicon Valley security firm. That security firm contacted the Times.
The security firm shared that it was able to determine that all of the companies hacked were subsidiaries of Burisma. A Ukranian television production company called Kvartal 95 was hacked and the company was founded by the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
Reportedly the phishing email targeted the email communications of the head of the company Ivan Bakanov. Bakanov is also the head of Ukraine’s Security Service.
Trump’s impeachment was centered on his controversial phone call with the president of Ukraine. During the phone call, Trump pushed for the country to open an investigation into his political rival Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. A whistleblower complaint about the phone call brought Trump’s actions into the light.
At this time, it is unknown what the hackers discovered or exactly what it is that they were searching for. Reportedly the tactics used by the hackers are very similar to the hacking of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman and the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 elections.
in 2018 the Justice Department indicted several officers from the G.R.U. in for the hacking. So far, neither Burisma nor Russia has made a public statement about the issue.
A spokesperson for Joe Biden’s campaign stated that the hacking attempt was recognition from Trump that “he can’t beat the vice president.”
“Now we know that Vladimir Putin also sees Joe Biden as a threat,” the spokesperson said. “Any American president who had not repeatedly encouraged foreign interventions of this kind would immediately condemn this attack on the sovereignty of our elections.”
