There has not been a reaction from the government in Beijing to Donald and Melania Trump’s positive COVID-19 diagnosis.
However, the top editor of one of China’s top state-run media outlets suggested that Trump and the First Lady deserved it.
“President Trump and the first lady have paid the price for his gamble to play down the COVID-19,” Global Times editor-in-chief Hu Xijin wrote in a tweet.
“The news shows the severity of the US’ pandemic situation,” Hu added. “It will impose a negative impact on the image of Trump and the US, and may also negatively affect his re-election.”
Hu has made his feelings about Trump quite clear since Trump took office.
He has been a constant critic of Trump’s especially as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe and also as US-China relations hit a major roadblock.
Back in June of this year, the US State Department designated the Global Times, which is a tabloid published in both Chinese and English along with several other Chinese media outlets as foreign missions “controlled by the government.”
The State Department also went as far as to limit the number of staffers working for the Chinese outlets in the US, at the time it cited “long-standing intimidation and harassment of journalists” in China.
Beijing did not take the move well and quickly retaliated by banning journalists from The New York Times, Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.
The Chinese government has also been deeply angry with Trump for his repeated attempts to blame China for the coronavirus outbreak. Trump has repeatedly referred to the coronavirus as the “China virus” and “Kung Flu.”
The White House announced Trump’s positive COVID-19 results in the early hours of Friday morning. More than 207,000 Americans have died while over 2.8 million have recovered from the deadly virus.
Sean Conley, the presidential physician said in a memo released by the White House that Trump and Melania “are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.”
“The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions.”
“Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments,” Conley added.
