On Wednesday during an interview with the New York Times, Chris Rock slammed Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats stating that they prioritized impeachment earlier this year and let the coronavirus into the country while they tried to oust Trump, who Rock likened to a 5-year-old.
Rock also recalled talking politics with his comedy colleague Dave Chapelle. He slammed Trump by comparing him to a “landlord.”
Rock says “we’re in the predicament” because “no one has less compassion for humans than a landlord.”
He then went on to link Trump to the 1987 film “The Last Emperor,” which Rock noted stars a child ruler.
“Did you ever see that movie ‘The Last Emperor,’ where like a 5-year-old is the emperor of China?” Rock explained. “There’s a kid and he’s the king. So, I’m like, it’s all the Democrats’ fault. Because you knew that the emperor was 5 years old. And when the emperor’s 5 years old, they only lead in theory.”
“There’s usually an adult who’s like, ‘OK, this is what we’re really going to do.’ And it was totally up to Pelosi and the Democrats. Their thing was, ‘We’re going to get him impeached,’ which was never going to happen. You let the pandemic come in. Yes, we can blame Trump, but he’s really the 5-year-old.”
“Put it this way: Republicans tell outright lies. Democrats leave out key pieces of the truth that would lead to a more nuanced argument. In a sense, it’s all fake news,” Rock added.
The first known U.S. case of the coronavirus arrived as the country was knee-deep in impeachment hearings. Trump was acquitted in February.
Fact checking Rock’s comments
So did Pelosi and the Democrats just “let the pandemic happen during impeachment?” Not really. When Rock stated, “Their thing was, ‘We’re going to get him impeached,’ which was never going to happen,” he was actually incorrect.
Trump was impeached. He was only the 3rd sitting president to even be impeached, in fact. What Rock meant to say, we imagine, is, “‘We’re going to remove him,’ which was never going to happen.” This is a much more likely statement.
Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats were never in the mindset of removing Trump from office with their Impeachment proceedings. They did know that wasn’t going to happen.
But everyone in the House of Representatives knew that impeachment proceedings were what needed to happen. Pelosi herself stated that if they did not move forward then they were not adhering to the oath they took to protect the country.
President Donald Trump was impeached on December 19th, 2019. This was nearly a full 3 months before we knew the extent of the pandemic. To say that the Democrats just let the pandemic in while they impeached Trump is not only misleading, it’s downright false.
The Trump administration knowingly mislead the American public on the extent of the pandemic and the coronavirus in February. This according to WaPo’s Woodward article and interiviews with Trump where Trump outright admitted it.
Also, it’s important to note that the extent of the pandemic even before impeachment went through was small and unsubstantiated outside of China. The first case of Covid-19 in the US was reported a full month later on January 20th, 2020 after Trump was impeached.
Rock’s accusation that the Democrats “let the pandemic happen during impeachment” is a fully untrue statement. It is confirmed through research that the pandemic happend and was worstened by the Trump administration’s failure to acknodlwedge the virus and to take the appropriate steps to mitigate its spread.
After all, Trump said it was a hoax at first and a Democrat plot against him.
How wrong he was.
