CNN has hit back tagging President Donald Trump and team with a cease-and desist-letter. As WarnerMedia claims a campaign ad is “deceptive” because it suggests that a CNN analyst agreed that President Trump’s actions saved potentially millions of lives.
The statement read, “This letter is written on behalf of Cable News Network, Inc. (“CNN”) regarding the false and misleading use of a CNN clip featuring Wolf Blitzer interviewing Dr. Sanjay Gupta by Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. in it’s ad entitled ‘American Comeback.'”
The ad cuts to critics of Trump’s ban on travel from China, including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who accuses Trump of “xenophobia.” With video of the two as Blitzer inquired: “Is it accurate that if these steps had not been put in place, … it could have been 2 million people down here in the United States?” while images of an airport screen showing “cancelled” flights and a Chinese airliner flash on the screen. “Yes,” Gupta replied.
CNN‘s parent company also expressed, “The advertisement purposely and deceptively edits the clip to imply that Mr. Blitzer and Dr. Gupta were crediting the President’s travel ban policy issued in January for saving millions of American lives, when in fact Mr. Blitzer and Dr. Gupta were discussing recently implemented socially distancing guidelines and stay-at-home orders issued by state and local governments. CNN hereby demands that you discontinue airing the advertisement with the CNN clip that has been distorted in such a way as to mislead the public.”
Plus announced, “The ad intersperses footage of flight boards in Chinese characters being changed to “cancelled” and footage of an Air China jet during the interview, leaving the viewer with the impression that Mr. Blitzer and Dr, Gupta were crediting the President’s travel ban policy from China for saving up to two million American lives, when in fact Mr. Blitzer and Dr. Gupta were referring to the social distancing guidelines and stay-at-home orders implemented by many state and local governments.”
In addition, “GIven the foregoing, CNN must insist that you immediately cease and desist from continuing to air the “American Comeback” advertisement that contains this misuse of CNN footage.”Trump has been butting heads with the network for quite some time. Clearly there is no end in sight.
