On Saturday, as the Conservative Political Action Conference was in full swing in Orlando, #Nazi was trending on Twitter because numerous Twitter users pointed out that the stage very closely resembles a well-known Norse rune used by the Nazis.
By late Saturday there were some 100,000 tweets comparing the stage to the ODAL Rune, famously used by a unit of the Waffen SS, a NAzi unit formed in 1941 that took part in action against communist-led Yugoslavia in WW2.
Even though the resemblance is remarkable to a point almost beyond coincidence, CPAC organizer Matt Schlapp blamed the criticism on “cancel culture,” denying that the resemblance is intentional:
Other Twitter users were not convinced by the denial:
The Hyatt Hotels released the following statement:
“We take the concern raised about the prospect of symbols of hate being included in the stage design at CPAC 2021 very seriously as all such symbols are abhorrent and unequivocally counter to our values as a company. The CPAC 2021 event is hosted and managed by the American Conservative Union that manages all aspects of event logistics, including the stage design and aesthetics. We discussed directly with ACU leadership who told us that any resemblance to a symbol of hate is unintentional. We will continue to stay in dialogue with event organizers regarding our deep concerns. Any further questions can be directed to CPAC.”
During CPAC a golden statue of Donald Trump was wheeled out and that statue has social media users talking about the Golden Calf.
The Golden Calf is a famous story from the Old Testament. The Israelites, who were newly freed from Egyptian slavery, have a crisis of faith while God is speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai so they melt down the gold jewelry to construct a physical god which ends up being a golden calf. It is a tale about how easily people are pulled into idol worship and how they are willing to abandon their commitments in favor of something bright and shiny.
The Golden Calf trended on Twitter on Friday because of a viral video of the golden statue of Trump being wheeled down a hallway at the 2021 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
Social media users pointed out that there were so many reasons why the Golden Calf is the perfect metaphor for the state of the GOP after Trump’s presidency.
The GOP sacrificed its commitment to political principles and threw morals out the window to worship at the altar of Trump.
GOP members stopped serving the public and began serving Trump. They embraced an individual who was accused of sexual misconduct by more than two dozen women. They worshiped a man who had an affair with a porn star while his wife was pregnant with his son and paid her hush money to go away. They did the bidding of a man who separated thousands of children from their parents at the border locked them in cages and did not keep proper records to ensure they could be reunited with their families.
They acquitted Trump in the Senate despite knowing that he incited the mob that stormed the Capitol resulting in the death of 5 Americans.
Trump’s hold on the GOP is still so powerful they are already preparing to support him as the 2024 presidential nominee.
Thursday night Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows appeared on Fox News and stated that the GOP was still “Trump’s party.”
“We will see the start of planning for the next administration and I can tell you — the people that are at the top of that list, all of them have Trump as their last name,” he says.
The Golden Calf tale ends with a furious Moses destroying the idol and dumping the ashes into water and forcing the Israelites to drink it as punishment.
For right now no one has destroyed the golden statue of Trump and the GOP is still willing to worship their false god.
