Tensions escalated in Congress on Wednesday as lawmakers erupted in heated debates over Elon Musk’s role in reshaping the U.S. government. The confrontation started when Democratic Representative Al Green from Texas called for former President Donald Trump’s impeachment, citing “ethnic cleansing in Gaza,” and declaring, “The movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring Articles of Impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done,”
Green, who had previously spearheaded Trump’s first impeachment in 2017, was adamant about bringing forth new articles of impeachment. Despite being acquitted in both of his impeachment trials in the past, Trump’s actions continue to fuel political tensions.
The uproar was followed by a contentious oversight hearing in the House of Representatives regarding Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Lawmakers were divided over Musk’s influence, with many Democrats questioning his significant involvement in government restructuring. Republican Chairman James Comer, who opened the hearing, emphasized his support for DOGE’s efforts to challenge bureaucracy and promised to focus on identifying fraud and inefficiency.
Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly raised concerns over Musk’s ability to make sweeping changes to federal agencies without proper Congressional oversight. He introduced a motion to subpoena Musk to testify on his role in these transformations. This sparked a clash, with Comer rejecting the motion as “not debatable,” leading to chaos in the chamber. Republicans moved to block the subpoena, further fueling the anger of Democrats, such as Representative Melanie Stansbury, who expressed outrage over the GOP’s stance on Musk’s influence in government.
Meanwhile, Musk, on the defensive, responded to criticism on social media, calling out Congresswoman Teresa Stansbury for attacking his efforts in government reform. The situation highlighted the growing tension between the Democratic and Republican factions, with each side claiming the other was out of line regarding Musk’s involvement in government affairs.
