On Monday a disgruntled employee at the State Department changed the biographies of Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to state that their term ended on Monday.
At the time of the change, there were 9 days left until President-elect Joe Biden was sworn in.
The changes were made to the State Department’s website just days after Trump incited a mob of supporters to storm the Capitol in an attempt to stop Congress from verifying the Electoral College votes, which were won by Biden.
On Monday, democrats moved to file articles of impeachment against Trump after Vice President Mike Pence made the decision not to invoke the 25th Amendment and immediately remove Trump from office.
The disgruntled employee changed Trump’s biography to read, “Donald J. Trump’s term ended on 2021-01-11 19:49:00,” and the vice president’s biography was edited to “Michael R. Pence’s term ended on 2021-01-11 19:44:22.” The time stamp on Trump’s page was changed multiple times.
Eventually, Trump and Pence’s pages were replaced with a 404 that read, “We’re sorry, this site is currently experiencing technical difficulties. Please try again in a few moments.”
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has ordered an internal investigation into the matter. Reportedly the investigation will begin with interns and employees leaving the State Department this week. However, an investigation into the matter could be a challenge due to the fact that so many people have administrative access to the content management system used for the State Department’s official website.
It’s a “closed system” that is “nearly impossible to hack,” one diplomat stated.
“It’s 100%, not a hack,” they said.
Dozens of career diplomats signed two dissent cables this week condemning Trump for inciting the deadly insurrection on the Capitol last week.
Over 100 State Department employees also signed the cable.
Part of the State Department employee’s frustration came from a weak statement that Pompeo published on Wednesday when he called storming the Capitol “unacceptable,” but failed to mention Trump.
