On Friday the White House announced Trump had made the decision to commute the prison sentence of his longtime associate and friend Roger Stone.
On Saturday morning, Trump went on the defense claiming that Stone was a victim of a “witch hunt.”
“Roger Stone was targeted by an illegal Witch Hunt that never should have taken place. It is the other side that are criminals, including the fact that Biden and Obama illegally spied on my campaign – AND GOT CAUGHT!” Trump tweeted.
Stone is a former campaign advisor for Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. He had been sentenced to more than 3 years in prison in connection to Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
Trump granted Stone clemency just four days before Stone was supposed to report to prison. Stone bever appeared worried about going to jail because he knew his longtime friend would intervene.
Democrats slammed Trump on Friday for the move. Stone is the highest-profile pardon Trump has issued so far.
“Donald Trump has abandoned the rule of law and made a mockery of our democracy. He truly is the most corrupt president in history,” tweeted Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, which is the panel in which Stone was convicted of lying to stated that Trump’s actions with Stone were his most “self-serving and destructive” move yet.
Schiff added that “commuting the sentence of Roger Stone, a crony who lied and obstructed our investigation to protect Trump himself, is among the most offensive to the rule of law and principles of justice.”
Trump had repeatedly attacked prosecutors involved in the case and criticized the Obama-appointed judge who oversaw Stone’s trial.
Trump’s decision on Friday was announced less than an hour after a federal appeals court denied Stone’s emergency motion to delay the start of his prison term.
