Fourteen Americans infected with the coronavirus returned to the United States instead of remaining in quarantine overseas. Those close to Donald Trump say that he is furious that those 14 individuals flew home without his permission.
Reportedly during a briefing, Trump had been informed that the healthy passengers that were quarantined aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship for weeks would be permitted to fly home, but those who were infected with the virus would remain in Japan in order to prevent the deadly virus from spreading.
After being informed that the 14 Americans, who tested positive for the virus, were on a plane headed back to the United States, Trump was “furious” reported the Washington Post.
The Post reported that officials with knowledge of the situation stated that the failure to inform Trump about the decision before the plane had taken off was a “big operational mistake.”
Trump then stated that bringing home infected individuals could damage his administration’s response to the global outbreak.
Reportedly officials made the decision to send the 14 individual’s home because though they had tested positive COVID-19 they had not shown any symptoms.
The 14 individuals were isolated from the other passengers on the plane.
“These individuals were moved in the most expeditious and safe manner to a specialized containment area on the evacuation aircraft to isolate them in accordance with standard protocol,” the State Department and Department of Health and Human Services said in a joint statement Monday.
“After consultation with HHS officials … the State Department made the decision to allow the 14 individuals, who were in isolation, separated from other passengers, and continued to be asymptomatic, to remain on the aircraft to complete the evacuation process.”
Once the arrived in the United States the infected individuals were isolated for medical care.
“Every precaution to ensure proper isolation and community protection measures are being taken, driven by the most up-to-date risk assessments by U.S. health authorities,” State and HHS officials said.
The coronavirus outbreak began in China. So far, nearly 78,000 people across the globe have been affected by the virus.
