Donald Trump Jr. used Twitter to help spread a conspiracy theory about a 61-year-old woman whose husband recently died from ingesting fish tank cleaner. The woman and her husband thought the ingredient in the cleaner was the same as found in a malaria drug that Donald Trump has been touting as a cure for the coronavirus.
The woman and her husband put the fish tank cleaner in a drink and drank it. Her husband died and she ended up in the hospital in critical condition. The woman told a local media outlet that she believed Donald Trump was partially to blame for her husband’s death.
Donald Trump Jr. found it appropriate to push a conspiracy theory that smeared the woman as a murderer in an attempt to shield his father from any responsibility in the man’s death.
The 61-year-old woman stated that her husband, 68, ingested some chloroquine that they discovered in their pantry. The chemical was not in medicine form and unsafe for human consumption.
Donald Trump Jr. retweeted a link to a right-wing conspiracy theory account that had shared screenshots that it claimed were from a deposition the woman gave back in 2012 in which she claimed a history of mental illness and a desire to divorce her husband. The conspiracy theory tries to make it appear that she murdered her husband years later and tried to blame Donald Trump for it.
Trump Jr. tweeted, “I look forward to the media follow up to this story. I mean they were very fast to blame Trump for this couple dosing themselves with Fish Tamk Cleaner that people likely deserve to hear this part too? No?”
Twitter users were quick to shut Trump Jr. down.
Author John Pavlovitz responded with, “Slow your roll, baby Don. Daddy is currently getting lots of people killed. If you had working empathy you’d realize how asinine you sound spewing nonsense like this right now, but then again…”
Twitter user Monty Flatten the Curve Boa tweeted, “Good thing POUTS isn’t responsible for the safety of citizens with mental illness, huh? That woman was just *bound* to drink a chemical he recommended, the way the MAGABomber was always going to mailbomb his critics. She *was* sane enough to blame him, though. (Also: “Tank”.)”
“Yeah DJTJ during a pandemic there’s going to be much more domestic abuse leading to murder. Why can’t u ever send out a positive & useful tweet & not just propaganda? What about thanking all the doctors & nurses risking their lives 24/7 trying to save many thousands of Americans” tweeted user Dave B.
Smokey Stafford tweeted, “The most difficult part about being a progressive, liberal, atheist or Democrat during this crisis is that, in the process of wanting to help the needy and innocent, you also have to assist those that are passively suicidal…. like Republicans, conservatives, and evangelicals.”
