Donald Trump is surrounded by some of the best health experts in the world yet he is reaching out to sports stars with no medical background for advice about the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier this week Trump stated that he had reached out to Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady about the coronavirus pandemic. Now it has been revealed that Trump also called former New York Yankees star Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez from the Oval Office.
John Santucci of ABC News was the first to report about Trump’s conversation with Rodriguez.
Trump reportedly wanted Rodriguez’s advice and opinion on his response to the health crisis. Santucci reported that they had a “pleasant conversation.”
Trump brought up Brady during a recent coronavirus press briefing, Why Brady was brought into the conversation is still unclear.
“After a meeting with the world leaders, I spoke with the governors of our 50 states and territories,” Trump stated on Thursday. “Our team has been in constant communication with the governors, and we had a terrific meeting.”
Trump then added, “somebody in the fake news said that one of the governors said ‘oh we need Tom Brady.’ I said ‘yeah.’ He meant that in a positive way. He said ‘we need Tom Brady. We’re gonna do great.’ And he meant it very positively. But they took it differently. They think Tom Brady should be leading the effort. That’s only fake news. And I like Tom Brady. I spoke to him the other day. He’s a great guy.”
It is believed that Trump brought up Brady to get back at Washington Gov. Jay Inslee. Inslee had been previously quoted by the Washington Post on Thursday morning as saying, “We need a Tom Brady” while he was pleading for more dramatic action from Trump as well as for medical supplies for his state.
Trump has not always had a good relationship with Rodriguez. He has repeatedly attacked Rodriguez on Twitter. In 2013 during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he called Rodriguez a “bad guy.” He also predicted in a tweet that Rodriguez would go down in history as the “biggest sports embarrassment of all time.”
Why Trump called Rodriguez for advice when he has no medical background during this medical crisis is anyone’s guess, but chances are good that he was looking for someone “important” to feed his ego.
