On Friday, the hashtag #CutiePie trended on Twitter after Donald Trump told a reporter not to be a ‘cutiepie” after asking him a question about the need for ventilators.
Trump used the term while replying to White House reporter Jonathan Karl during a coronavirus press conference. Karl pressed Trump on whether he could guarantee coronavirus patients in the states that have been hardest hit would get much-needed ventilators.
At first, Trump tried to blow off the question by stating that the country was “in great shape.” He then suggested that an excess of ventilators “could be produced.”
“We’ve distributed vast numbers of ventilators, and we’re prepared to do vast numbers. I think we’re in great shape,” Trump responded. “I hope that’s the case. I hope that we’re going to have leftovers so we can help other people, other countries.”
“So, everybody who needs one will be able to get a ventilator?” Karl asked Trump for the second time.
“Look, don’t be a cutie pie, ok?” Trump shot back. “You know, ‘everybody who needs one.’ Nobody’s ever done what we’ve done, nobody’s done anything like we’ve been able to do… I wouldn’t tell me what you’re telling me, you know, being a wise guy.”
The incident quickly trended on Twitter and Karl stated that it definitely was “not the response I expected.”
