Elizabeth Warren’s campaign team doesn’t want to discuss Hillary Clinton, but that has not kept Warren and Clinton from talking behind the scenes.
Reportedly the two women have kept an open line of communication going since Warren made the decision to run for president. Before now only communication between the two right around the time Warren launched her campaign has been reported. Now sources have spoken to NBC under the condition of anonymity say the two have kept in contact.
It is not known how often they talked or what they discussed because both camps want to keep the communication under the radar.
One source told NBC that they were only aware of one call between Warren and Clinton since Warren launched her campaign, but another source close to the Clinton camp says that the contact has been substantial enough to merit attention, describing a conversation between the two as seemingly recent because it was “front of mind” for her.
“That has clearly not gone unnoticed, and I think she really appreciates that,” the person close to Clinton said.
There is little doubt that Warren would like to win over support from Clinton voters, particularly women as she battles Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden and the rest of a field.
People who know and like both women say there are more similarities between them than some of their partisans would like to admit. Both of them are policy powerhouse with an extraordinary command of details. They both possess the ability to master new material quickly and both have a deep intellectual curiosity.
A blessing from Clinton could help Warren if she finds herself if battling for delegates and superdelegates at a contested Democratic convention next summer.
“Hillary Clinton would absolutely have influence over a number of delegates to this convention,” said Deb Kozikowski, the vice-chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Party.
So far, Warren aides have declined to discuss the relationship between the two women, the dates or content of their conversations and Clinton’s camp isn’t spilling the tea either.
