Jeremy Lin, former NBA player and a current guard for the Beijing Ducks used Twitter to call out Donald Trump for his racist rhetoric. Lin stated that Trump’s use of the term “Chinese virus” was empowering racism.
“I wish you would powerfully support the vulnerable people that will suffer due to our mismanagement of this virus, including those that will be affected by the racism you’re empowering,” Lin tweeted on Wednesday.
Lin’s tweet was referring to a tweet that Donald Trump made on Tuesday. In the tweet, Trump stated that he would support industries that have been impacted by the shutdowns caused by the coronavirus.
“The United States will be powerfully supporting those industries, like Airlines and others, that are particularly affected by the Chinese Virus,” Trump tweeted. “We will be stronger than ever before!”
After being bashed online for his racist rhetoric Trump stated that the term was On Wednesday, “not racist at all” because “it comes from China.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) has strict guidelines that are used to name infectious diseases for locations such as the West Nile virus.
Lin was born and raised in Torrance, California. He played in the NBA for 10 seasons. He won an NBA Finals championship as a Toronto Raptor.
