Sierra Halseth, 16, and her 18-year-old boyfriend have been charged with first-degree murder after and her 18-year-old boyfriend. Anthony Guerrero, face murder charges for stabbing, burning, and dismembering her own father.
Sierra Halseth and Anthony Guerrero face murder charges after her 45-year-old father Daniel Halseth was discovered stabbed, burned, and partially dismembered.
On Friday, officials discovered the grisly scene after the landlord contacted Las Vegas police to check on him after his mother contacted the landlord because she had not heard from him in two days.
The landlord arrived at the scene and opened the garage where he discovered the charred remains. The man had suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest, neck, and back. The landlord also reported that Halseth’s car was missing.
Once inside the residence responding offers immediately detected the strong odor of lighter fluid throughout the house. They found a large scorch mark on the floor in the living room and a puddle of blood, as well as a brand-new chainsaw. In the kitchen, they found a handsaw “with apparent blood and tissue on the saw and in between the groves of the saw.” They also discovered a circular saw with extra blades and two folding knives.
Police say that there had been an “extensive” effort to clean up the house. They believe that the fire had been set in an attempt to cover up the crime.
While officers were on the scene a couple approached them and stated that they were searching for their son, Anthony Guerrero, who was dating Halseth’s daughter.
Guerrero’s mother told the police that the teens had been dating since June of 2020 until December of 2020 when Daniel Halseth contacted them and told them he had discovered the pair were planning on running away to Los Angeles together. They all agreed the teens should no longer see each other.
Guerrero’s parents state that soon after telling their son he could no longer see Halseth he ran away.
After speaking with the Guerreros the police contacted Halseth’s ex-wife Elizabeth, who now goes by Elizabeth Helgelien, after marrying Vegas realtor Tiger Hegelian. She told them that she and her ex had remained close after the divorce and that they still shared a joint bank account. She also stated that around the time of her ex-husband’s murder $1,300 had been taken out of the joint account in multiple transactions that set off a fraud alert.
She also told p her ex had been having trouble with the daughter, specifically surrounding her boyfriend Guerrero.
The teens were easy to police that her ex-husband had been having issues with their daughter in relation to Guererro. The teens took Halseth’s blue Nissan Altima and bought two gallons of bleach and a gallon of orange juice. They also went to Home Depot and purchased gloves.
The teens were arrested on Tuesday on a train headed to Utah after Guerrero was asked to show his ticket and admitted that he didn’t have one.
“It’s definitely disturbing when you have such young … a young man and a young woman that is being accused of such a horrific crime,” Lt. Ray Spencer of Metro’s Homicide Section stated.
“We do know that the father had recently made comments that he did not want his daughter dating Aaron,” he added.
Spencer adds that when Helseth’s mom couldn’t contact her son, she tried calling her granddaughter; Sierra. Her granddaughter told her that her father was in the shower and that his phone was broken, which is why she had been unable to contact him.
“Through the investigation, we have been able to determine from surveillance video at various local big box stores where those items were purchased, where we have them on video surveillance, both of them purchasing different items, from the chainsaw to the bleach and items that were used to clean up the crime scene,” Spencer added. “There is surveillance video and receipts, indicating when the items were purchased here locally that were used in the cover-up of the crime.”
It appears that both teens will be tried as adults.
Guerrero’s attorney Gabriel Grasso says that he was relieved the young couple is now “safe and sound” and in the hands of officials.
“Now that, hopefully, they are safe and sound, and they’re in the hands of the authorities at this point, but at least they’re not, you know, out there on their own, and they’re, I mean, they’re both pretty young people,” he added. “Now, reality sets in, and we have to see what’s up and what the evidence shows and how much if any, the trouble they’re in.”
Elizabeth Helgelien was elected to the state legislature in 2010. She was the youngest female state senator in Nevada’s history.
She resigned in February 2012, citing an “incredibly difficult private matter” and the need to focus on finding a better-paying job and her role as a mother of three children.
She resigned just two days after legislative members proposed replacing her because she had missed too many meetings and was difficult to reach. Just three months before she resigned, she had filed for divorce from Daniel. They had been married for 11 years and had three children together.
Three months after her resignation, she was featured in Maxim’s Hot 100 and posed for a second bikini shoot in the magazine later that year. She ran unsuccessfully for Senate again in 2018.
