Former Texas congressional candidate, Autry Pruitt, appeared on Fox News on Wednesday and stated that President Joe Biden only appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to handle the mounting crisis at the border because of her race.
Pruitt, a CEO of the New Journey PAC, stated that Harris was only tapped for the position “because she has brown skin.”
“Vice President Harris’s appointment was simply because she has brown skin,” Pruitt stated.
“President Biden is trying to inoculate himself against attacks after all of the images have come out, after all the mistreatment of kids at this border, after the surge – he needs someone brown so he can ward off criticism,” Pruitt continued.
Pruitt campaigned for Trump back in 2016. He is the author of the book, “Planes, Steak & Water: Defending Donald J. Trump.”
When appointing Harris, the White House cited Harris’s experience dealing with immigration while she was attorney general in California for six years yet Pruitt stated that he had no idea what her qualifications were.
“What other reason is there?” Pruitt said. “Is she some kind of border expert? Has she spent years at the border? She won’t even go to the border.”
Fox News has heavily covered the influx of unaccompanied minors crossing the border over the past several weeks. Fox has attempted to paint the situation as the worst crisis at the border in decades immigration experts have pointed to historic patterns of greater migration during the late winter and early spring.
“This new surge we are dealing with now started in the past administration, but it is our responsibility” to deal with it now, Biden stated during his announcement of Harris’ new role.
when announcing Harris’s new role.
“I can think of nobody who is better qualified to do this,” Biden said.
Texas’ Republican Senators, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn led a Senate delegation to the U.S./Mexico border.
The trip was part of Senate Republicans’ plans to up the pressure on President Biden over a crisis they claim is fueled by his administration’s immigration policies, according to a Cruz tweet:
The two Trump-backing, ultra-conservative lawmakers will led the delegation to check out the border, including a roundtable with local stakeholders, according to their respective offices.
Recent weeks have seen migrant numbers dramatically escalate, as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported more than 100,000 migrants in February, while the number of them that are minors has tripled in that time.
While the Biden administration has been upping facility space, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that the situation was “difficult,” as they expect to see more immigrants crossing the border in coming weeks than at any point in the last 20 years.
Republicans blame the surge on Biden rollbacks of the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), the stoppage of border wall construction, and reduction of interior enforcement, and have called for hearings on the crisis. Border state governments have also sued the Biden administration for limiting the power that ICE agents have to arrest and deport.
