George Takei has called out Donald Trump for his racist use of the term “Chinese virus” when referring to the coronavirus. Trump has repeatedly referred to the coronavirus as the “Chinese Virus” while speaking publicly and on social media.
On Wednesday during a coronavirus press briefing, he defended his use of the racist rhetoric despite the fact that it has caused a rise in criticism from Asian-Americans. As well as lawmakers and health officials. Officials have warned Trump that using the term stigmatizes certain ethnic groups.
“I have to call it where it came from,” Trump said, referring to the coronavirus, which was first detected in Wuhan, China back in December 2019.
“Star Trek” star George Takei, 82, appeared on MSNBC on Saturday and criticized Trump’s use of the term.
“We are chilled by the constant use by the president and his administration of that term,” Takei said. “We have a long history of anti-Asian hatred in this country.”
During his appearance, Takei referred to an incident that took place in New York where an Asian woman was discriminated against amid the coronavirus outbreak.
“His doing that sends a cold chill throughout the Asian American community, because he’s sending a signal to the haters and his constituencies, and there are plenty of them there,” Takei said.
Takei has also spoken out about the issue on his social media accounts. He has referred to Trump as “unhinged,” “unfit,” and “delusional.”
“Italy went into lockdown as a country 2 weeks ago. Still, nearly 800 Italians died yesterday, and new cases are rising quickly,” Takei tweeted. “Anyone who thinks that in 2 weeks this is going to resolve itself in America is delusional. Yes, including you, Donald.”
“We may not have a president, but we still have great leaders. Listen to them when they say #StayHome,” Takei tweeted back on March 15.
Takei has been joined by other celebrities who have used their social media accounts to criticize Trump’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
“So…what possessed Trump to dismantle the US Pandemic Response team put in place by #Obama, for just such an event as the one we are living through now? #JEALOUSY!” Bette Midler tweeted on March 12. “This schmuck is so self-centered, selfish, and COLOSSALLY STUPID.”
