Many social media users believe that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is the man Democrats should get behind for president. On Saturday #CuomoForPresident topped Twitter’s trending list.
One day earlier the hashtag #WheresJoe trended as many social media users questioned why Biden hasn’t been more visible during this mounting health crisis. Biden’s camp says that he plans to address the nation sometime next week.
Since the coronavirus outbreak began, Cuomo has appeared on television daily giving updates on New York’s situation. New York is the state hardest hit by the pandemic with over 12,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Cuomo does not mix words in his television appearances. He is straightforward with his advice. In a recent press briefing, he called teens and young adult’s behavior “unintelligent and reckless” because so many refuse to heed warnings and practice “social distancing” to help stop the spread of the virus.
“These pictures of people on beaches, these videos of young people saying, ‘This is my spring break, I’m out to party,'” Cuomo stated on Thursday in Albany. “This is so unintelligent and reckless. I can’t even begin to express it.”
Cuomo spoke about the issue again on Saturday.
“There’s a significant amount of non-compliance, especially in New York City, especially in parks,” Cuomo said, again referring to congregating young people. “I’m gonna go down there today, I want to see what the situation is myself.”
“President Cuomo is really raising the bar for leadership right now] and I’m here for it. #PresidentCuomo#CoronavirusPandemic,” one Twitter user wrote.
“Proud to have Gov Cuomo not only leading NY but also the country. #PresidentCuomo.” another Twitter user posted. “We’re already tested more people than any city . . .”
Cuomo’s television appearances have overshadowed both Biden and Sanders. Cuomo’s strong emergence during this crisis has stolen the spotlight from Biden and Sanders and reportedly both camps are concerned about the governors growing popularity.
On Friday, Biden announced plans to launch daily coronavirus news briefings of his own, but the announcement only came after the hashtag #WhereIsJoe trended.
“I want to be in daily or least in significant contact with the American people and communicate what I would be doing, what I think we should be doing, and how we should be doing it,” Biden told reporters. “Hopefully by Monday, we’re going to be in a very different place in terms of the ability to be in communications with all of you.”
Biden also admitted that Cuomo was doing “one hell of a great job.”
On Saturday, Bernie Sanders suggested that all Americans should receive $2000 in pandemic relief. Sanders hosted an online roundtable on Friday urging all Americans to work together to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.
Reportedly, both Biden and Sanders’ camps have been in regular contact about the coronavirus. Some voters believe that Sanders’s efforts came far too late because of the delegate’s gap between him and Biden.
With his actions in New York Cuomo may be in the best position to challenge Trump, but whether he is interested in running is something that he has not addressed.
