On Tuesday, Indiana Rep. Jim Lucas made a Facebook post that received major backlash. Lucas posted a racist depiction of black children.
In his now-deleted post, Lucas depicted dancing African American children with the caption, “We gon’ get free money!”
It only took moments for the Republican representatives’ post to receive furious replies.
“It makes me want to cry. And that’s the truth,” said Jeannine Lee Lake, an African-American Democratic congressional candidate. “I’m just amazed. He’s a leader in our state. This is not Indiana. It’s not the best of Indiana certainly. And it’s sickening.”
“Reached this morning on his cell phone, Lucas, R-Seymour, said he doesn’t see color and doesn’t believe his post was racist,” reported Chris Sikich. “He’s said he created the meme Monday night to protest federal bailouts that have created more debt for future generations. He happened to find a picture of black kids dancing in the meme generator, he said, but could have just as easily chosen a photo with white kids.”
Lucas would also claim that the dialect used on the meme is how he and others in the area talk.
“I don’t see anything wrong with it. People who want to find racism are going to find racism in anything,” Lucas said.
In a later post-Lucas wrote, “I saw a picture that has been used thousands of times of a cute little kid dancing in a cocky manner, smiling his butt off. Others chose to see the color of the kid. Who’s the racist?”
This is not the first time that Lucas has made public posts that reeked of hatred and racism. Back in August of 2019, he received major criticism for posting an image of a noose under the story of a black man who had been convicted of rape.
Lucas has also been criticized and received backlash for blaming sexual assault survivors for their own attacks, in a letter he penned for a local newspaper he wrote that women should take responsibility for preventing rape by carrying a gun and if they didn’t do that the rape was their fault.
