Twenty-six years ago, Jim Carrey left In Living Color and went on to become one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors. On Wednesday it was announced that Carrey would be making a return to his sketch-comedy roots.
Next season Carrey will be starring on SNL. Carrey will be playing Joe Biden.
“Jim Carrey is going to do Biden,” creator Lorne Michaels said. “There was some interest on his part. And then we responded, obviously, positively. But it came down to discussions about what the take was.”
“He and Colin Jost had a bunch of talks. He and I as well. He will give the part energy and strength, and… Hopefully, it’s funny.”
Carrey has hosted SNL in 1996, 2011, and again in 2014 after he auditioned for the show in 1980 and was not selected.
SNL also shares that it will be working closely with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office to determine a safe procedure for admitting a live audience to Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center.
SNL could become one of the first shows to bring live audiences back.
Bill Maher’s HBO show ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ had a studio audience of 25 last week.
Carrey just recently starred in Showtime’s Kidding and also appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog. Carey is a long-time critic of Donald Trumps.
He will be the third person to play Biden on SNL. Both Woody Harrelson and Jason Sudeikis played Biden.
Alec Baldwin will be returning to play Donald Trump and Maya Rudolph will return to her role as Kamala Harris.
SNL will open the upcoming season with five straight weeks of live shows. The shows kick off on October 3.
