On Tuesday, former Vice President Joe Biden blasted Donald Trump for stating that he wants America “open for business” no later than Easter. Biden told CNN’s Jake Tapper that Trump needed to “stop talking and start listening to the medical experts.”
While speaking with Fox News on Tuesday morning, Trump stated that he has set Easter as the latest date to get businesses up and running. Trump’s plans have received major criticism and health experts across the nation warn it will have deadly repercussions.
“Look, we all want the economy to open as rapidly as possible. The way to do that is let’s take care of the medical side of this immediately,” Biden said told Tapper.
Biden went on to state that he could envision some parts of the country and some sectors being ready to return to work on Trump’s timeline.
“But the idea that we’re in a position where we’re saying, by Easter, he wants to have everybody going back to work? What’s he talking about?” Biden asked.
Biden added that Trump is “not responsible for the coronavirus” but that he is “responsible for the delay in taking the actions that need to be taken.”
Biden then said that Trump should have invoked the Defense Production Act much earlier and used its powers to require companies to rapidly ramp up production of medical equipment like masks and ventilators so that medical facilities and hospitals weren’t scrambling for supplies like they are now.
“He says he’s a war-time president — well God, act like one. Move. Fast,” Biden stated.
Biden is home because the coronavirus pandemic has ended the campaign trail. He turned one room of his home in Wilmington, Delaware into a broadcast studio and on Tuesday began a media blitz.
During the interview, Biden shared that he has not been tested for the coronavirus because he has not had any symptoms. He added that he is following his doctor’s advice and keeping a distance from his grandchildren and ensuring that everyone, including the Secret Service, who enters his home is wearing a mask and gloves.
