If there is anything predictable regarding the holiday season on cable news networks it is the fact that Fox News will spend much of their time drumming up irrational fears about a so-called “War on Christmas.” It is a yearly tradition for them that as is American as cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. However, it seems that Eric Trump and his wife, Lara Trump, believe that the war just might be over.
This Trump couple did an interview in Trump Tower with former judge turned Fox News personality Jeannine Pirro. During the interview, naturally, this “war” on Christmas came up. Being the sycophant to all things Trump that she is, Pirro decided to first butter Eric and Lara Trump up. She raved about how they had “done wonderful things for the country,” and how President Donald J. Trump himself has single-handedly gotten rid of the “political correctness” that had people scared of their minds so much that saying “Merry Christmas” had become some kind of social crime. Lara Trump then went on to say in response:
“You can say Merry Christmas again. Isn’t that so nice, Jeanine?”
Eric Trump echoed his wife, and said:
“It’s incredible. It is nice to say Merry Christmas again.”
The problem here is not whether or not people have been allowed to say “Merry Christmas” or anything of the sort. “Merry Christmas” has not been replaced by “Happy Holidays” or anything else. The problem is the false fear-mongering. The people on Fox News and their ilk have spent years claiming that Democrats, atheists, liberals in general, people not of the Christian faith, and all sorts of people are taking “their” America away and reforming it into something Godless and sinister.
That makes no sense, though, considering the fact that according to Pew, more than 70% of Americans self-identify as Christian. While there has been some decline in active church attendance and adherence to religion, there is certainly no “war” on anything, much less Christmas. From October until January, you cannot walk in any store without seeing Christmas decorations and displays everywhere. It is the most lucrative holiday ever financially, and no way are retailers giving that up. But, despite all evidence, the denizens of Fox News and right-wing talk radio will keep peddling that lie.
It is also hilarious that Lara and Eric Trump think that “Merry Christmas” every went anywhere and even more so that they seem to sincerely believe that Donald Trump brought it back.
