Representative Madison Cawthorn defended the Second Amendment, claiming that it allows citizens of the United States to overthrow the federal government if it becomes despotic.
On Wednesday, Cawthorn, a Republican from North Carolina’s 11th congressional district, spoke with Newsmax’s Chris Salcedo about gun rights and the amendment’s purpose.
The 25-year-old is the House of Representatives’ youngest member and the first to be born in the 1990s. He informed Salcedo that if it were necessary, American citizens could fight the government successfully, giving the Viet Cong as an example.
President Joe Biden has nominated David Chipman to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and Salcedo asked Cawthorn about him (ATF).
On May 26, Chipman testified before a Senate committee, and Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) asked him to define an assault weapon.
“An assault weapon would be, in the context of the question you asked, what Congress defines it as,” Chipman told Cotton.
Chipman added that the ATF defined an assault rifle as “any semi-automatic rifle capable of accepting a detachable magazine above the caliber of .22, which would include a .223, which is, you know largely the AR-15 round.”
Cotton and others chastised him for his replies, and Chipman’s declared goal of banning AR-15 assault rifles has sparked debate among Second Amendment supporters. On Wednesday, Cawthorn slammed Chipman’s remarks.
“I actually saw him try and walk that back and say ‘you know what, the definition of an assault weapon is anything that shoots a semi-automatic round, something you can pull the trigger multiple times without having to reload,'” Cawthorn told Salcedo.

“That is basically every single modern sporting rifle in the United States of America he said.
“But let me tell you—the Second Amendment is not written for sporting,” he went on. “The Second Amendment is so that if a tyrannical government ever wants to rise up, we can stop them.
“And if anybody ever wants to say, ‘Oh, well you know what? Citizens with a few small arms fire would never be able to stop the federal government.’ I absolutely disagree,” Cawthorn said.
“Ask the Viet Cong how they handled the Marines and the Army in Vietnam,” he said.
The Viet Cong was a Vietnamese Communist revolutionary organization. The toppling of the South Vietnamese government and the reunification of North and South Vietnam were the group’s principal goals.
They fought a primarily guerilla war against South Vietnamese and American soldiers, eventually reuniting the country, which is still under Communist authority. The Viet Cong, on the other hand, sustained massive losses during the period of formal American engagement in the combat, which lasted from 1964 to 1973. There were 58,220 Americans who perished in Vietnam.
Cawthorn made headlines earlier this week when it was revealed that his top employee earns the equivalent of $127,111 a year despite having no experience in government and no other employment experience other than owning Texas fireworks shops.
According to the quarterly disbursements statement, William “Blake” Harp, the first-term Western North Carolina Republican Cawthorn’s chief of staff, earned $31,777.77 in the first quarter of the year, or $127,111 yearly.
That is not unusual for someone in charge of a member of Congress’s office.
But, unlike past chiefs of staff, Harp, who appears to have known Cawthorn since at least 2016, when Cawthorn was 20 and Harp was the same age, has no experience in government, according to a Republican legislative staff member.
Harp had stated his sole work had been a construction job and running fireworks stands in Texas, where he grew up, according to the employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the topic.
“One hundred twenty-seven thousand dollars is not exorbitant for a chief. It’s highway robbery for anyone for whom it’s their first real job and they bring no discernible skills,” the staffer said.
Micah Bock, a spokesman for Cawthorn, did not reply to requests for comment on June 14 or for Harp’s résumé or any documentation of his expertise.
