Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was criticized by Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) for suggesting that the United States go through a “national divorce,” which is a code word for Republican-controlled states leaving the union a la the South did during the Civil War.

According to Deseret, Romney made the remarks to Utah media in Salt Lake City.
“Sen. Mitt Romney on Tuesday firmly denounced Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent call for a ‘national divorce,’ harkening back on what happened in the U.S. during the Civil War,” reported Katie McKellar. “‘You know, I think Abraham Lincoln dealt with that kind of insanity,’ the Utah Republican told reporters during a brief press availability during his visit with lawmakers at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City. ‘We’re not going to divide the country. It’s united we stand, divided we fall,’ Romney said.”

This independence plan was offered in a tweet on Monday by Greene, a far-right congressman connected to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) who is renowned for pushing the QAnon conspiracy theory.
She wrote, We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government,” she wrote. “Everyone I talk to says this. From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are done.”

Secession is against the law. However, the previous attempt ended in a war that resulted in the deaths of 620,000 Americans and the general destruction and reconstruction of the South.
This comes just after Gov. Spencer Cox, another well-known Utah Republican, denounced Greene’s remarks on Twitter. He wrote, “This rhetoric is destructive and wrong and — honestly — evil,” he wrote. “We don’t need a divorce, we need marriage counseling. And we need elected leaders that don’t profit by tearing us apart.”
