A new book authored by a pair of journalists from The Daily Beast alleges that President Donald Trump expressed misogynistic attitudes toward a reporter, which included transphobic remarks toward her parent.
Trump has long had antagonistic feelings toward journalist Katy Tur, being upset with her coverage of his campaign as a reporter for NBC News and MSNBC starting in 2015, when he announced himself a candidate for high office. Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program in November of that year, Trump asked host Joe Scarborough “what happened” to Tur.
During that same broadcast, Trump kissed Tur, without her permission, behind the scenes — an incident Trump actually talked about on that day’s program.
“I just saw her back there. I gave her a big kiss,” he said. “She was fantastic.”
Tur recounted her encounter with Trump in a 2017 memoir book about her time covering him on the campaign trail, USA Today reported.
Trump appeared on the show, and, “[b]efore I know what’s happening, his hands are on my shoulders and his lips are on my cheek,” Tur wrote in her tell-all book about her covering the Trump campaign. “My eyes widen. My body freezes. My heart stops.”

Tur became a frequent target of Trump’s during his campaign for president, along with other media he deemed “fake news” at that time. Following his appearance on the “Morning Joe” program where he kissed Tur, he called her a “third-rate reporter” at a rally a month later.
His attacks against Tur weren’t just in public, but in private, as well. According to a new book, Sinking in the Swamp, authored by Daily Beast reporters Lachlan Markay and Asawin Suebsaeng, Trump continued to demean Tur, as well as her mother, Zoey Tur, a trans woman and former journalist herself, to aids in the White House as well as personal friends of his.
Trump called Tur “that bitch with the tranny dad,” according to an excerpt from the book.

Under the Trump administration, there have been a number of noticeably anti-trans measures undertaken.
In January of this year, for example, a number of executive branch departments proposed rule changes that would “eliminate the rights of people receiving help from federal programs to request a referral if they have a concern or problem with a faith-based provider and to receive written notice of their rights,” effectively allowing faith-based organizations to continue receiving federal funds even if they engaged in discriminatory actions, TransEquality.org reported.
Trump also announced in 2017 a ban on servicemembers in the military who identified as trans men or women, citing “tremendous medical costs and disruption” for doing so, in spite of the fact that such costs have accounted for less than 1 percent of the total military health budget since 2016, PBS NewsHour reported.

Trump promised during his 2016 campaign for president to be a “real friend” toward members of the LGBTQ community, following a mass shooting at an Orlando, Florida, nightclub in the summer of that year.
