On Thursday night during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” former President Barack Obama joked that if Donald Trump does not concede the election to president-elect Joe Biden, he could be removed kicking and screaming from the White House on Inauguration Day by Navy SEALs.
Kimmel asked Obama what might happen if an “unnamed person” were attempting not to be found.
“You know the White House well,” Kimmel said. “You lived there for eight years. Are there places someone could hide? Like, if, say, they were going to be removed? Are there little cubby holes or anything that you know about?”
Obama laughed and said: “Well, I think we can always send the Navy SEALs in to dig him out.”
Trump is still refusing to concede the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden. He continues to push baseless claims of widespread voter fraud. He has filed lawsuits in several key states. Many of those lawsuits have already been thrown out by judges.
Trump will remain president until January 20, when Biden will be sworn in on Inauguration Day. If Trump refuses to accept the election results it is unclear at this time what steps the Biden team may take. Trump has not publicly stated if he plans to exit the White House peacefully.
Never in U.S. history has a president had to be forcibly removed from the White House so there is no procedure for that situation. Being forcibly removed would just further tarnish Trump’s presidency and his reputation so many of his supporters believe when the time comes there will be a peaceful transition.
Some experts say that if Trump does refuse to exit the White House that the Secret Service may be responsible for seeing him to the exit.
A Biden representative stated not long after Biden was declared president-elect that the U.S. government was “perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House.”
Joe Biden has been denied access to transition materials, including funding and access to intelligence briefings to government agencies.
Obama told Kimmel during his appearance that “I wish the transition was going better. We lose time during these crises.”
Biden has publicly warned that more Americans could die of COVID-19 if Trump does not start the transition process.
Obama added: “When I came in, we were in the middle of a big crisis: the financial crisis. George W. Bush — he and I had obviously big policy differences — but he’s a good man. He’s a patriot. And he ordered everybody on his team to work seamlessly with us on the transition.”
Obama added that Bush “could not have been more gracious, could not have been more helpful.”
“And that actually helped us be able to get a head start on trying to stem what could have been a great depression instead of a great recession,” he shared.
