Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has reportedly taken a first look at potential candidates to serve as Democrats’ impeachment managers. The supposed list features many lower chamber Dems. They would be responsible for presenting the Democrats’ impeachment case in front of the Senate.
The House Judiciary Committee held its opening hearing in a continuing presidential impeachment inquiry today. Chair Jerry Nadler (D-NY) is managing this round. A panel of academics and legal scholars spoke at length on the subject.
Nadler and company are expected to draft articles of impeachment. As Pelosi’s office has quietly reached out to some members she believes could serve as managers, while others have pushed their own names forward several sources told The Hill.
Among them, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY) Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. In addition to Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD), a constitutional lawyer and member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. Plus Rep. Zoe Lofgren (CA), long-standing member of the House Judiciary Committee.
Further including Rep. David Cicilline (RI), House Foreign Affairs Committee. And Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA), an ex-prosecutor sitting on both Judiciary and Intelligence Committees. Along with Rep. Val Demmings (FL), part of the Congressional Black Caucus. Also serving on both Judiciary and Intelligence Committees. She is a former police chief and would bring a law enforcement background.
As well as Rep. Adam Schiff (CA), Chair of House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Schiff has played a key role in House Democrats’ impeachment drive. Then Rep. Jackie Speier (CA) a close ally and geographical neighbor of House Speaker Pelosi.
Beyond that Rep. Jim Himes (CT), second most senior member of the Intelligence Committee. Following him, Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX) an attorney and leader of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus. His brother Julian is a Democratic presidential candidate in 2020. Finally is Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL) who previously practiced law in Chicago and sits on the Intelligence and Oversight panels.
A number of which had participated in closed-door depositions that were led by Schiff. They include Representatives Raskin, Cicilline and Swalwell. Rival Republicans taking major issue with Democrats making that unilateral move.
Reports are that Pelosi may be in the process of gauging precisely how much Democratic support can be built for impeachment. What exactly will ultimately comprise those articles of impeachment.
The House speaker said to set her own agenda. “She doesn’t follow parades,” Congressman Gerry Connolly, a Democrat from Virginia. “She leads them.”
