On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she has asked key chairmen to draft articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. It is expected that the House will vote to impeach Trump later this month.
“Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders, and a heart full of love for America, today I am asking our chairmen to proceed with articles of impeachment,” Pelosi stated during a brief press conference.
Pelosi did not go into any real details but did share that Democrats are now considering “multiple articles” of impeachment against Trump. Some of those articles include obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and obstruction of Congress. The House Judiciary Committee could write up the articles of impeachment as early as next week.
“His wrongdoing strikes at the very heart of our Constitution. Our democracy is what is at stake,” Pelosi stated during a nationally televised address that lasted about ten minutes.
“The facts are uncontested,” Pelosi added. “The president abused his power for his own personal political benefit at the expense of our national security.”
Before Pelosi addressed the nation, Donald Trump tweeted a defiant statement.
“If you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast,” Trump tweeted. He then added that he wants a “fair trial” in the Senate. “We will have Schiff, the Bidens, Pelosi and many more testify, and will reveal, for the first time, how corrupt our system really is.”
…..trial in the Senate, and so that our Country can get back to business. We will have Schiff, the Bidens, Pelosi and many more testify, and will reveal, for the first time, how corrupt our system really is. I was elected to “Clean the Swamp,” and that’s what I am doing!

Pelosi shared that the decision to proceed with articles of impeachment was made with a heavy heart, but that it was a necessary step in order to “preserve American democracy.”
Pelosi spoke about the vision of the Constitution’s framers who feared that a president could attempt to assume powers of a monarch and allow foreign influence to corrupt the country’s government.
Reportedly, senior Democrats have privately stated that they want to wrap up the vote to impeach Trump by December 31.
Pelosi’s announcement comes just one day after the House Judiciary Committee held its very first impeachment hearing.
