White nationalism is on the rise around the globe, and Donald Trump’s bigoted rhetoric and the equally hateful policies of his administration are right at the root of this rapidly growing problem. We here at VozWire have already reported on how Trump’s specific brand of hate has emboldened this dangerous and poisonous ideology in America and around the world. However, something even more sinister is happening. Young, right-wing activists are mainstreaming white nationalism, and the political right and the Republican Party are their planned vehicle. In fact, MSNBC already did an extensive piece on how white nationalists are planning to infiltrate the GOP, starting on college campuses with College Republicans chapters and other right-wing college activists groups, and then work their way into mainstream Republican electoral politics.
The even scarier part is the fact that it is working out beautifully for them. The proof is in just how many white nationalists have already run for office as Republicans. Here is the segment:
The thing is, there is still time to stop this. However, unless it is overt white nationalism, the Republican Party is content to ignore the problem and pretend that left-wingers who do not like their policies are making something out of nothing. Then again, what choice do they have with such an obvious bigot as Donald Trump leading their party from the Oval Office? However, with Democrats in control of the House of Representatives, sweeping this issue under the rug is not as easy as it once was.
On Tuesday, Candace Owens of Turning Point USA, a right-wing activist group that targets young people, sat in the hot seat on Capitol Hill during a hearing on the rise of white nationalism in America. Ms. Owens is a Black woman, which makes her membership most advantageous to any group wanting to claim that they are not racist. Find a token to hold up, and voila! No issues. During the hearing, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) took out his smart phone and played some most disturbing comments made by Candace Owens that appear to be some kind of strange defense of Adolf Hitler. On the tape, Owens said:
If Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, okay, fine. The problem is that he wanted, he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize. He wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German. Everybody to look a different way. To me, that’s not nationalism. In thinking about how we could go bad down the line, I don’t really have an issue with nationalism. I really don’t.

Owens is a face of Turning Point USA, which has been described as a nationalistic, right-wing organization that is doing just what Identity Evropa is doing, which is infiltrating the GOP through College Republicans chapters and recruiting otherwise mainstream, impressionable young conservatives into coded white nationalist ideology. Instead of swastikas and Ku Klux Klan hoods, these are buttoned-up business types that you might see at almost any right-wing gathering of ideologues. That is what makes them so dangerous. The presence of a Black woman in the organization in Candace Owens just makes the infiltration that much easier. To be fair to Owens, she did try and explain away the comments regarding Hitler, though honestly, it was not that convincing, despite her outraged tone. We even used the account of one of her supporters for the video source:

In short, Candace Owens is being used as the perfect token vehicle to legitimize some genuinely disturbing viewpoints. Despite the fact that she would be a target of these people were she not useful to them, she lets her internalized racism and opportunistic pandering lead her to back an ideology that views her and those like her as less than human. Now, if it were just Candace Owens who was being used and hurt here, that would be one thing. That would be her choice. However, Owens is allowing herself to be used to craft and mold a whole new generation of white supremacists who have the express purpose and goal of completely taking control of one of America’s two major political parties.
The Republican Party is obviously prepared to, for the time being at least, completely ignore the rise of white nationalism in America. Instead, they would rather follow Trump’s lead and pretend that the real problem is Islamic extremism and “caravans” of South American immigrants who are coming across the border to take over, force everyone to speak Spanish, and end America as we know it. But the rest of us had better wake up and realize what is happening before it is too late. These groups are not what they seem on the surface.
In fact, just last year as Turning Point USA was first rising in prominence on America’s conservative campus scene, The Daily Beast reported that it was a racist organization with seriously shady campaign activity. The Beast says of Turning Point:
According to the New Yorker report, the group regularly funnels money into student government elections to support right-leaning candidates on campuses all over the country. The piece points to an atmosphere within the organization that was hostile to minorities, with examples including a text message from Crystal Clanton—formerly the group’s national field director—to another Turning Point employee that allegedly said: “I hate all black people. Like fuck them all… I hate blacks. End of story.” Additionally, the exposé suggested TPUSA violated campaign-finance laws by supporting political campaigns despite being barred from doing so.
So, in other words, from its very beginning, Turning Point USA has been nothing but a hotbed of racism, corrupt finances, and generally bad practices – and they now have foothold on college campuses around America where they can hone and shape young, impressionable minds into a new white nationalist generation of ultra conservatives. In other words – it isn’t the Ku Klux Klan of old, but it is just as dangerous. In fact, considering the covert nature of the organization’s operational practices and their stated goal – they are even more dangerous than any of us could have ever imagined. If these people get their way, we will, in less than a generation, have a literal white nationalist party as one of America’s two major political parties.
If that doesn’t scare people into waking up here, I don’t know what would.
