Senate Judiciary Committee Leader Lindsey Graham (R-SC) punched back hitting Special Counsel Robert Mueller after his Saturday opinion piece published in the Washington Post.“Apparently Mr. Mueller is willing — and also capable — of defending the Mueller investigation through an op-ed in the Washington Post,” Graham said in a statement. “Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have previously requested Mr. Mueller appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify about his investigation. That request will be granted.”
Asked whether Mueller had formally been invited to testify, a spokeswoman for Graham announced, “A formal invitation to Mr. Mueller is in the works.” From USA Today:
Mueller broke a yearlong silence Saturday, defending the prosecution of Roger Stone and the broader investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Mueller’s remarks, prompted by Trump’s commutation of Stone’s 40-month prison sentence Friday, are the first since he testified before a House committee last year after his team brought charges against at least a half-dozen Trump associates during his campaign and after he took office.
Stone had been set to begin serving his sentence Tuesday. He the last person charged as a result of Mueller’s nearly two-year investigation. Mueller’s voluminous report, released last year, found that the Trump campaign was an eager beneficiary to Russia’s systematic efforts to help Trump win the presidency, but it did not find a conspiracy with the Kremlin.
“In my view it would be justified if President @realDonaldTrump decided to commute Roger Stone’s prison sentence,” Graham shared on Twitter ahead of Trump’s action. “Mr. Stone is in his 70s and this was a non-violent, first-time offense.”
White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere stated, “Robert Mueller and his corrupt investigation failed to hold anyone in the Obama-Biden Administration accountable for their negligence toward Russian interference or for spying on the Trump Campaign based on a Democrat-funded dossier full of lies, and instead wasted taxpayer dollars trying to undo an election. Mr. Mueller should keep his promise to the American people and let the report, which fully exonerated the President, stand instead of pontificating in the editorial pages with more spin.”
What could be expected as a result?
