Ted Cruz went viral twice in the same day for two separate odd incidents. When word surfaced on Monday that Texas’ electrical grid was in peril owing to rising temperatures, it prompted a slew of jokes about the state’s Republican senator, who had fled the area after a freak winter storm earlier this year.
He was back on top in a matter of hours, this time after releasing a bizarre video in which he recites the “Pledge of Allegiance” to a flag.
In an attempt to mark Flag Day, Cruz remarked, “This didn’t use to be controversial.” The senator is awkwardly standing in front of a flag, his palm over his heart, robotically delivering the phrase that originated somewhere in the late 19th century, in the video, which lasts only 14 seconds.

Is it genuinely controversial? Not at all. It’s unclear to whom Cruz was referring. This was clearly just another attempt by Cruz to incite outrage about patriotism. Perhaps he decided he could use a distraction on the day he was being dragged on Twitter for past dishonorable behavior.
Those who already dislike him, though, were clearly unconvinced. Some slammed his assertion of a “controversial act” as complete nonsense.
Twitter users had a lot to say about the bizarre video.
Jeff Tiedrich wrote, “stop the performative grievance-baby nonsense, you grandstandng huckster, reciting the Pledge is not controversial. pledge to the flag all you want-the next time you’re in a Cancun airport, while your constituents are freezing in the dark, for example.”
Molly Jing-Fast from the Daily Beast responded with “Imagine if you cared about Texas power grid as much as you cared about shit posting.”
:Texas is broken. This is one of the guys that broke it. The grid is about to collapse and this is @tedcruz response. He’s done nothing for Texas but damn is he a carnival barker of fear mongering and bullshit. I guess all the flights to Cancun were booked,” tweeted TitusNation.

Cruz was widely mocked at the end of May after a video resurfaced that appears to show Cruz eat a fly during an interview.
Ted Snooze, Lying Ted, and Cancun Cruz, you’ve all been replaced. Following an unfortunate event on Fox News, Senator Ted Cruz has been given a new moniker on social media. Cruz was chatting with Sean Hannity when the incident occurred, and social media was quick to respond with a barrage of memes.
A fly has stolen the show from a Republican politician for the second time. Users saw a fly on Mike Pence’s head during a vice presidential debate in October 2020, which the then-VP seemed to overlook. That episode sparked a lot of attention, resulting in memes and even spoof accounts.
Cruz is seen conversing with Hannity as a fly enters his mouth, according to a widely distributed video. Before returning to his talk with Hannity, the Senator coughed and then gulped a glass of water. The entire video is only around six seconds long, yet it soon became a Twitter craze late on May 26. But, before you go making your own meme, keep in mind that the video isn’t brand new.

It’s unknown when the incident occurred, but it was published by a user named Methy Anne in response to Rinaldi’s request. “Eat it up, Ted!!!” Anne tweeted, tagging Cruz in the original message.
Oh. My. God. He ate a fly! pic.twitter.com/SFBfkWzxA8

Several of Anne and Rinaldi’s followers began retweeting the video shortly after that tweet, and it snowballed from there. After being posted by campaigner and journalist John Aravosis, the video became viral almost immediately. #ToadCruz is currently trending on Twitter, with over 4,000 tweets and counting as of this writing.
One Twitter user commented,”#ToadCruz is trending because Ted Cruz swallowed a fly, live on Fox News?? Why do we write fiction, reality is so good”
