This election season has been a tense one and it has brought out the worst in a lot of Americans who share different political views. In Shelbyville, Tennessee the KKK is adding to the tension by leaving threatening cards at the homes of individuals that display Biden/Harris signs.
The KKK cards read, “You have been paid a social visit by the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan don’t make the next visit a business call.”
Breanna Green is a resident of Shelbyville and a close friend of hers was targeted by the KKK.
“We noticed that there was litter in the yard. I started to pick up the litter and noticed these business cards,” Green said.
What Green thought was litter was 20 business cards from the KKK that were thrown all over her friend’s front yard.
”It’s scary knowing that just supporting a presidential candidate can incite this kind of vandalism,” Green said.
Green said the cards were in response to her friend’s Biden/Harris signs. She adds that this election season has raised a lot of tension with hate groups in the area.
“There was also tire marks in the yard which indicated the sign had been ran over,” said Green.
She says the vandalism was done early Sunday morning.
Another woman reported that her Biden/Harris signs had been stolen and that the KKK business card had been left in her mailbox.
“There is some anxiety that people could be targeted in my family. Just people in the community could be targeted as well. I just don’t think this should be something that we’re dealing with in 2020,” said Green.
The Shelbyville Police Department released the following statement on the incidents: “The Shelbyville Police Department has been made aware of a limited number of incidents involving theft and/or damage to campaign signs. This is true for both Trump and Biden yard signs. We have also been made aware of local residents receiving literature from individuals purporting to be from the knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Similar literature has been found in driveways and yards for a number of years.”
Law enforcement is encouraging anyone who is a victim of this type of vandalism or intimidation to contact them immediately.
