After endless twists and turns on a long winding road to impeach, this drive has reached an important stop. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) declared Tuesday, September 24th the lower chamber would be opening an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. A move fueled by the whistleblower complaint charging an individual “received information from multiple U.S. Government officials that the President of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election.”
The accusation is linked to a July 25th phone call purporting the president unduly influenced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for political gain. Plus a second likely “obstruction of Congress” article in which the myriad Trump investigations led by six House committees could present their best evidence that Trump stonewalled them with unprecedented intensity. Pelosi further added the house will “move with purpose and expeditiously” to accelerate formal impeachment procedures.
This act essentially is a culmination of exhaustive efforts made by House Democrats to corral the Chief Executive. A final straw swiftly breaking as details of the controversial call emerged in late September. A conversation in which the president seemingly prompted Zelensky to probe into ex-Vice President and current Democratic presidential front runner Joe Biden. More specifically President Trump inquired about any potential criminal activity including Biden’s unscrupulous financial ties to Ukraine. By extenstion a plum gig handed to his troubled son Hunter at Burisma Holdings. As an ill-equipped Hunter Biden was inexplicably granted a board of directors’ post leading the global gas and energy titan without explanation. With quite a generous compensation package set for him as he reportedly hauled in up to $50,000 per month.
The president’s fears were confirmed as Biden was captured on video at a Council on Foreign Relations discussion on Jan. 23, 2018, bragging about how when he was in office in March 2016 he strong-armed the Ukrainians into firing a top prosecutor by threatening to withhold foreign aid. That prosecutor Viktor Shokin had been in the process of investigating Hunter Biden and Burisma. While father Joe asserted $1 billion of U.S. aid hung in the balance. President Trump additionally must answer the allegations he instructed his acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney to delay releasing more than $250 million in Ukrainian aid. That in order to leverage his own political interests.
Yet as the House of Representatives push forward with impeachment proceedings, Trump may ultimately pull the upper hand. A 1998 pact signed by President Bill Clinton in Kiev seems to offer a legal precedent for such dialogue between the nations. The Treaty with Ukraine on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters subsequently was ratified by the Senate in October of 2000. Attorneys from the Justice Department later examined an official transcript of the call released by the White House and saw no evidence of wrongdoing there.
A veritable cast of characters in Washington play significant supporting roles in this drama. To start with House Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff (D-CA). The congressman from California a loathsome rival of President Trump. Most importantly Rep. Schiff approved and dispatched intelligence staffer Thomas Eager to Ukraine from August 24th-31st. During the visit Eager supposedly met with former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko, a known democratic ally. This trip allegedly sponsored by Atlantic Council. A think tank funded by George Soros and his Open Society Foundations. The infamous anti-Republican operative plays a major part in pulling strings behind the scenes far and wide. Less than two weeks elapsed from when Congress received that whistleblower complaint until Eager was on a plane to Ukraine.
On Tuesday Rep. Schiff tried to get ahead of the bad press. His office proclaimed that excursion was organized months in advance. Curious timing of that journey. Was it pure coincidence? Is he perchance leaving something out of the story? As reports recently surfaced that Schiff was apprised of the whistleblower complaint much earlier than previously indicated. This apparent confirmation reinforces the prevailing theory that Schiff possibly was in collusion with that person. Even as far as personally helping to secure favorable and qualified legal representation. In the form of Washington, D.C. counselor Andrew P. Bakaj. Once an intern both for Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton. A documented campaign donor of Joseph R. Biden. Did Schiff help orchestrate a nefarious plot?
Also another jaw dropping development needs to be addressed here. That regarding the sudden alteration of an Office Inspector General intelligence community (ICIG)/Disclosure of Urgent Concern Form. A document mysteriously modified shortly ahead of this grievance being officially revealed. Those rules had previously required a first person account. The freshly amended version complete with relaxed standards effectively endorsing hearsay got updated and posted only hours prior to when the whistleblower incident was reported.
Beyond that a plethora of political players are likely to be exposed as this astonishing tale comes to light. They range from high-ranking members of the president’s cabinet to foreign diplomats who could be complicit or hold sensitive information. A number of which are soon slated to testify on Capitol Hill. Namely the previous United States Special Representative for Ukraine trade negotiations Kurt Volker who suddenly resigned last Friday. Along with Marie L. Yovanovitch the previous U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. Who strangely got removed from the position in early May. Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo interestingly were mentioned as well. A slew of big name actors are sure to follow.
Many democrats feel the anonymous complainant is a juicy target for intimidation and reprisal by the president. That individual’s identity has been a subject of great speculation. Meanwhile House Democrats and their minions in corporate media quickly rallied by taking control of the narrative. As they flatly rejected the president’s claims outright giving them no credence. A wrinkle to watch: House Judiciary Committee chair Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) is a key figure in this politically-driven hunt. Nadler just happens to be a sworn enemy of the president. An entire nation anxiously waits for that whistleblower to be identified and give their sworn testimony under oath in front of Congress.
Ukraine is merely the latest battlefront drawn in a wide-ranging war fought largely by forces within our nation’s capital. An epic struggle almost 3 years in the making literally spanning our political spectrum. From shutting down subpoenas targeting Trump’s own personal tax returns to proposed new rules for the U.S. Census. At least 30 White House and Justice Department attorneys are believed to be assisting in his defense. Some of them quietly attending Capitol Hill impeachment-focused hearings. Aggressive legal briefs and counter suits foiling efforts to gather fuel for potential proceedings. As they work diligently and discreetly to stay ahead of the curve. A team now featuring Pat Cipollone as lead White House counsel. The point man entrusted to manage his ever expanding legal affairs.
All things considered we hardly scratched the surface. No telling where this bumpy road will take us.
