Donald Trump has been pulling out all the stops to try and ensure the 2020 presidential election goes his way.
Despite all of his efforts, misinformation, and flat out lies Joe Biden still leads in the polls.
Now according to a report by The Atlantic, the Trump campaign is actively plotting “contingency plans to bypass the election results and appoint local electors in battleground states where Republicans hold the legislative majority.”
It is possible that Team Trump could tell GOP controlled state governments to choose electors and to completely ignore any unfavorable popular vote national Republican sources told The Atlantic.
“The state legislatures will say, ‘All right, we’ve been given this constitutional power,’” a Trump campaign legal adviser told the Atlantic. “‘We don’t think the results of our own state are accurate, so here’s our slate of electors that we think properly reflect the results of our state.’”
Some Republican leaders have already in a casual manner indicated that they’d be happy to enable this kind of power grab.
“I’ve mentioned it to them, and I hope they’re thinking about it too,” Lawrence Tabas, chairman of the Republican Party in Pennsylvania said. “It is one of the available legal options set forth in the constitution.”
It is a truly disturbing prospect bypassing the popular vote in battlegrounds that are GOP controlled, it could be just one of several vulnerabilities in the electoral system that Trump could attempt to exploit this fall.
We could see Trump start a legal battle by declaring absentee ballots as fraudulent even before they are processed.
It’s clear that a quick and overwhelming Biden victory would certainly help matters. Unfortunately, Trump and Biden are locked in tight races in several key states such as Arizona, Georgia, Florida, and Iowa.
When asked if he would accept the election results, Trump stated, “I have to see. Look, you—I have to see. No, I’m not going to just say yes. I’m not going to say no, and I didn’t last time, either.”
As the election grows closer it becomes more and more obvious that our country’s Democracy is being seriously threatened.
This is none more apparent than when Trump and his entire administration attacks mail-in voting.
As we’re still in the throws of a global pandemic, the likes of which haven’t been seen in a century, and which could have been stopped if we had appropriate leadership, mail-in voting will be crucial to a fair election.
On top of that, both he and Melania have requested absentee ballots in Florida. Which goes directly against hie rhetoric.
Trump has also admitted that he has poruposfully sabotaged the USPS. In an interview with Fox News he was quoted as saying:
They want $25 billion for the post office. Now they need that money in order to have the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots. Now in the meantime, they’re not getting there. But if they don’t get those two items that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting…because they’re not equipped.
Essentially what this means is Trump is saying that the USPS doesn’t matter. Which is not the truth at all.
The USPS will be essential to this election.
Around the same time as that interview back in August, Trump also did not sign the CARES act.
Congress had initially intended on giving the USPS a $13 billion grant, but Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin quashed the measure, telling lawmakers, “You can have a loan, or you can have nothing at all.”
The only thing that is certain for the rest of 2020 is that this year is going to be a turning point in American history and, likely, global history as well.
