President Donald Trump gave a strong hint earlier today about what soon may follow. “We‘re going to put a hold on money spent to the WHO. We’re going to put a very powerful hold on it and we‘re going to see,“ Trump expressed early in today’s White House coronavirus task force press conference.
But shortly after the president walked back his declaration, telling reporters that he was “looking into it.” As Trump stated, “The W.H.O., that’s the World Health Organization, receives vast amounts of money from the United States and we pay for a majority — the biggest portion of their money.”
Plus he added, “They actually criticized and disagreed with my travel ban at the time I did it, and they were wrong. They have been wrong about a lot of things. They had a lot of information early and they did not want to divert [from being] very China-centric.” “Fortunately I rejected their advice on keeping our borders open to China early on,” he stressed. “Why did they give us such a faulty recommendation?”
And declared, “We have to look into that. So, we’re going to look into it. We pay for the majority of the money that they get.” In addition, “We want to look at the World Health Organization, because they really are — they called it wrong. They called it wrong. They missed the call. They could have called it months earlier, they would have known. And they should have known. And they probably did know.”
“So we will be looking into that very carefully,” he announced. “And we will put a hold on money spent to the W.H.O. We’re going to put a very powerful hold on it, and we’re going to see. It is a great thing if it works, but when they call every shot wrong, that is no good.”

Trump’s directives contradicted WHO recommendations that “travel bans to affected areas or denial of entry to passengers coming from affected areas are usually not effective in preventing the importation” of coronavirus cases, but may instead “have a significant economic and social impact.” The WHO reported, “In general, evidence shows that restricting movement of people and goods during public health emergencies is ineffective in most situations and may divert resources from other interventions.”
While The WHO did acknowledge that travel restrictions “may have a public health rationale at the beginning of a containment phase of an outbreak, as they may allow affected countries to implement sustained response measures, and non-affected countries to gain time to initiate and implement effective preparedness measures.”
The inability to screen Americans for the coronavirus on a larger scale as it began proliferating within the U.S. has been perhaps the most criticized aspect of the administration’s early response, in addition to Trump’s attempts to downplay the nature of the disease’s threat.
