On Friday protesters gathered outside the White House demanding justice for George Floyd. According to the New York Times, a White House official has shared that Trump was taken to an underground bunker.
The official says that Trump stayed in the bunker for almost an hour before being brought back upstairs. It is unclear if Melania and Barron were taken to the bunker with him.
Also, on Friday, Trump used Twitter to praise the Secret Service for keeping him safe then went on to threaten protesters with “vicious dogs” and “ominous weapons.”
Let’s be honest it just isn’t normal for a president to boast about his protection. On Saturday after the protest outside the White House had wrapped up Trump declared himself safe then went on to attack Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser wouldn’t let the city’s police force assist during Friday’s protests, which was not the case.
Bowser responded to Trump in two tweets.
“My police department will always protect DC and all who are in it whether I agree with them (such as those exercising their First Amendment Right) or those I don’t (namely, @realdonaldtrump)…” Bowser wrote in her first tweet.
She concluded with, “While he hides behind his fence afraid/alone, I stand w/ people peacefully exercising their First Amendment Right after the murder of #GeorgeFloyd & hundreds of years of institutional racism There are no vicious dogs & ominous weapons. There is just a scared man. Afraid/alone…”
Several White House insiders have stated that officials close to Trump have expressed major concerns about Trump’s tweets and how they are fueling the country’s mounting rage.
Reportedly there is a serious divide among Trump’s top allies and advisers over how he should address the protests and riots.
Officials are strongly urging Trump to formally address the nation and call for peace. Other officials have asked him to condemn the riots more forcibly or risk losing the middle- of -the- road voters come November.
