The United States has surpassed 19,000 deaths from coronavirus. Despite the still-growing numbers, Donald Trump recently stated that he is launching an “Opening Our Country” task force.
“I’ve made a lot of big decisions in my life”, Trump said at his daily coronavirus briefing on Friday. “This is by far the biggest decision of my life because I have to say okay let’s go.”
Back in late March, Trump had set Easter Sunday as the date that he would order businesses reopened. He set the date against the advice of the country’s top health experts.
“We’re not doing anything until we know that this country is going to be healthy. We don’t want to go back and start doing it over again.”
On Friday, the World Health Organization warned that a premature lifting of lockdown restrictions would spark a “deadly resurgence.”
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently stated that “lifting restrictions too quickly could lead to a deadly resurgence,” he added. The way down can be as dangerous as the way up if not managed properly.”
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is a member of Trump’s coronavirus task force, appeared on CNN on Friday where he stated that even though there was evidence of declining rates of the coronavirus, “now is no time to back off.”
He then added that any timeline for opening-up or easing of measures imposed while the U.S. fights the outbreak has to be based completely on data.
On Friday, John Hopkins University reported that the global death toll passed 100,000. Global numbers of recorded cases passed 1.7 million.
