On Thursday while appearing on the Geraldo Riveria show Donald Trump stated that a vaccine for the coronavirus could be ready before election day.
Trump’s statements totally contradict what health experts have said is a realistic time table for a vaccine.
Rivera asked Trump if a vaccine could be ready to go by Election Day and Trump replied, “I think in some cases, yes, possible before, but right around that time.”
“We have great companies, great. These are the greatest companies of the world,”
Trump said. “And the rest of the world is also doing vaccines, so let’s see how they do. I’m all for them, whoever comes up with them.”
Health experts have already stated that the development and necessary testing of a vaccine is still months away. Most say that it would be a miracle if a vaccine was available before 2021.
Dr. Anthony Fauci recently told Reuters that vaccine doses could be available in 2021. His timeline looks nothing like what Trump is now claiming.
Fauci also stated that health regulators would not be pressured into rushing out a vaccine before the November election.
“They are not going to let political considerations interfere,” he stated.
Trump has repeatedly suggested that a vaccine will be available before the end of the year. He has never offered any type of evidence to back up his claims.
Trump’s claim comes as he is facing an uphill battle in the polls and is still struggling to get some type of grip on the COVID-19 pandemic.
