On Tuesday, Donald Trump pondered why his current approval ratings are nowhere near those of Dr. Anthony Fauci when it comes to the handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
During a press briefing, Trump stated that he was glad Fauci has been accepted by the public, but that he found it “interesting” that his approval rating of handling the coronavirus was so low compared to Fauci’s.
“I get along with him very well and I agree with a lot of what he’s said,” Trump stated during the briefing.
“It’s interesting: he’s got a very good approval rating. And I like that, it’s good,” Trump. He then pointed out that Fauci is “working for this administration.”
“He’s working with us,” Trump said. “We could have gotten other people. We could have gotten somebody else. It didn’t have to be Dr. Fauci. He’s working with our administration. And for the most part, we’ve done what he and others, and Dr. Birx and others, who are terrific, recommended.”
Trump then sarcastically added that his approval ratings should be much higher and questioned if his low ratings were because of his personality.
“And he’s got this high approval rating. So, why don’t I have a high approval rating with respect — and the administration — with respect to the virus? We should have it very high, because what we’ve done in terms of — we’re just reading off about the masks and the gowns and the ventilators. Numbers that nobody’s seen. And testing at 55 million tests,” he said.
Trump went on to call the difference in their approval ratings “curious.”
“So, it sort of is curious. A man works for us, with us, very closely, Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx also, highly thought of, and yet — they’re highly thought of, but nobody likes me. It can only be my personality, that’s all.”
Recent polls show that 67% of Americans disapprove of how Trump has handled the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent Quinnipiac poll showed that more than 65% of Americans had faith in Dr. Fauci and the majority of those who distrusted him were Republicans.
Trump’s comments about Fauci came in response to a reporter asking him about a tweet that he made on Monday calling Fauci a “fraud.” The tweet was quickly removed.
On Tuesday, Dr. Fauci appeared on “Good Morning America” and shared that he does not read Trump’s tweets and added that he”will continue to do my job no matter what comes out.”
“Because I think it’s very important. We are in the middle of a crisis with regard to an epidemic, a pandemic. This is what I do. This is what I’ve been trained for my entire professional life and I’ll continue to do it,” Fauci stated. “I have not been misleading the American public under any circumstances.”
