Donald Trump added some real fuel to conspiracy theories surrounding Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide and took a real brutal swipe at Clinton’s while doing it.
On Saturday, Trump retweeted a post that came from comedian Terrance K. Williams, who suggested a connection between the Clinton’s and Jeffrey Epstein, who was an acquaintance of the former president.
“Died of SUICIDE on 24/7 SUICIDE WATCH ? Yeah right! How does that happen,” the tweet read, alongside a photo of Epstein and one of the Clintons. “#JefferyEpstein had information on Bill Clinton & now he’s dead I see #TrumpBodyCount trending but we know who did this! RT if you’re not Surprised.”
Trump’s retweet came shortly after Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., pushed back on the “immediate rush to spread conspiracy theories about someone” in another political party.
In a video Williams’ argued that “for some odd reason, people with information on the Clintons end up dead and they usually die from suicide.” “C’ mon now.”
Williams was, however, wrong about Epstein being on suicide watch. Epstein was placed on suicide watch back in July after an incident where he was found in the fetal position on the floor of his cell with bruises on his neck. Though it was not clear if the injuries were a result of a suicide attempt or if he had been attacked by another inmate, he was put on suicide watch.
A Bureau of Prisons spokesman stated on Saturday that Epstein was not on suicide watch at the time of his death. Reportedly he had been taken off suicide watch at the end of last month.
The billionaire was indicted last month on federal sex trafficking charges and faced up to 45 years in prison.
On Saturday, the Justice Department announced it would pursue an investigation into Epstein’s death. “I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody. Mr. Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered,” Attorney General William Barr said.
“In addition to the FBI’s investigation, I have consulted with the Inspector General who is opening an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Epstein’s death.”
Conspiracy theories topped Twitter’s trending list on Saturday. You had some social media users accusing the Clinton’s of Epstein’s death with #ClintonBodyCount then you had those who pointed the finger at Donald Trump, who was also a friend of Epstein’s trending #TrumpBodyCount.
Epstein did visit the Clinton White House several times in the 1990s and President Bill Clinton has acknowledged taking four trips on the multimillionaire’s private plane. A spokesperson for Clinton has stated that “the president knew nothing of Epstein’s terrible crimes and has not spoken to him in “well over a decade.”
Trump, meanwhile, partied with Epstein several times in Palm Beach and called him a “terrific guy” in an interview with New York magazine in 2002. One of the young girls that Epstein allegedly had sex with and forced to have sex with his friends was recruited by Epstein’s longtime companion at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.
