According to a new book excerpt published Tuesday, Donald Trump claimed that his youngest kid Barron was critical of his first 2020 presidential debate performance against Joe Biden, saying the then-14-year-old warned him he was being ‘too tough.’
The former president expressed his displeasure with Fox News Sunday presenter Chris Wallace’s moderating of the September debate.
Trump made the remarks to Fox pundit and The Federalist senior editor Mollie Hemingway, who is writing a book called “Rigged: How the Media, Big Tech, and Democrats Seized Our Elections.”
“The problem was Biden would speak and it was lie after lie, after lie. Everything he said was a lie, this guy, and then Chris Wallace wouldn’t let you respond. Chris Wallace was terrible,” Trump said.
During the notoriously tense discussion, Biden and Trump alternated rejecting and speaking over one other. Their disorderly and at times violent behavior prompted debate organizers to issue a statement promising to make the next event ‘more orderly.’
Trump acknowledged to hearing some of the unfavorable comments, including from his 15-year-old son, who was just 14 at the time.
“People thought I was too belligerent,” he said.
“I will say my own son Barron said, “Dad, you were too tough. You didn’t have to keep interrupting him”.”
When the moderator interrupted Trump’s effort to question Biden about his son Hunter, particularly a 2014 event in which the recovering drug addict was wired $3.5 million by the wealthy widow of a Moscow mayor disgraced for corruption, Trump accused Wallace of hiding for Biden.

He claimed that the Fox anchor protected Biden, an allegation that would place Wallace in morally perilous territory as a moderator.
“He wouldn’t let us talk about the mayor of Moscow’s wife giving three and a half million dollars to [Hunter] Biden. He protected him from the Ukraine questions, Chris Wallace protected [Biden],” Trump said.
Chris Wallace later admitted he was ‘sad’ about how the debate went.
“He was unable to protect himself. I had Biden and Chris Wallace would not let those questions be asked.”
During a particularly contentious moment at the September debate, the current president denied that his son was paid the money and called Trump a “clown.”
“Joe got $3.5 million from Russia. And it came through Putin, because he was very friendly with the former mayor of Moscow and it was the mayor of Moscow’s wife. He got $3.5 million. Your family got $3.5 million and you know, someday you’re gonna have to explain — why did you get three and a half [million]?” Trump said at the event.
Telling both men the American people “would rather hear about more substantial topics,” Wallace intervened.
“I’d like to talk about climate change,” he added, and Biden replied “So would I.”
It’s unusual to hear this, because for the most part, every member of Donald Trump’s family has basked in the celebrity spotlight, except his youngest son.
Barron has stayed out of the limelight and remains a bit of a mystery to the world.
Barron Trump is the only child of the former president and Melania. He is not often seen in public and if he is it is always with his mother at his side. Barron, 14, has avoided making headlines like other first children in the past.
Many people have had questions about Trump’s mysterious son and we have some of those answers for you.
Barron is one of five Trump children, all from three different marriages. His older brothers, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and older sister Ivanka are the children of Trump and his first wife, Ivana Trump. His other sister, Tiffany is the daughter of Trump’s second wife, Marla Maples.
Barron is significantly younger than his siblings and Melania decided it was best for him to keep a low profile throughout his father’s presidency.
Barron is multilingual; he speaks both Slovenian and English, Slovenian is his mother’s native language. He also speaks French. Barron continues to speak to his mother in Slovenian to this day. He has even spoken to his mother in her native tongue in front of the Secret Service.
Reportedly, it annoys Donald Trump when his wife and son converse in Slovenian because he has no idea what they are saying.
Like many other American teenagers, Barron is a bit obsessed with sneakers. His shoe of choice is the 574 Core sneakers from New Balance, which he has been photographed wearing.
When Trump moved into the White House in 2016, Melania made it clear that she and Barron would remain in Manhattan until Barron’s school year was over.
Melania and Barron moved to D.C. in June of 2107. Reportedly, Melania was reluctant to relocate not inky because of Barron’s school, but also because she had a deep love for New York City.
When Barron was born in 2006, he received some lavish gifts from celebrities. Dennis Basso sent baby Barron a white mink coverlet, and journalist Barbara Walters sent him a massive stuffed dog. Ellen DeGeneres sent the new baby a gold stroller replete with its own chandelier.
Other friends sent a number of onesies to baby Barron, many that featured Donald’s catchphrases from his Celebrity Apprentice days, including “You’re Fired.”
Many of the celebrities, who sent gifts, such as Ellen DeGeneres, now oppose Trump and were very vocal against him during his presidency.
Barron looks very much like his father and because of that Donald Trump’s youngest son has become the spitting image of his father as he’s grown up. But according to Melania Trump, Barron Trump resembles his father in other ways, so much so that she has a special nickname for him. “He is independent and opinionated and knows exactly what he wants,” she revealed to Parenting (via Romper). “He is a mixture of us in looks, but his personality is why I call him little Donald.”
In 2019 the country of Mongolia gifted Barron Trump a horse. The horse, named Victory, will remain in Mongolia but is “beautiful” according to Barron. Stephanie Grisham, the press secretary at the time, said that the family was “very grateful” for the gift.
Barron is a passionate soccer player and went through a growth spurt that now has him towering over his father.
Now that the Trump’s no longer reside in the White House, Barron has continued to stay out of the spotlight while attending a private school in Florida.
