On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced the nomination of Melinda Hildebrand, the owner of a Texas donut shop, as the next U.S. ambassador to Costa Rica.
In a statement, Trump revealed his decision to appoint Hildebrand, highlighting her contributions to his presidential campaign.
“I am pleased to announce that Melinda Hildebrand will serve as the next United States Ambassador to Costa Rica.” Trump wrote.
His statement contintinued: “Melinda is an incredibly successful businesswoman and philanthropist, who serves as the Vice Chair of the Hildebrand Foundation, and Vice President of Hilcorp Ventures Inc. She is also the President and Owner of the popular River Oaks Donuts. She will fight tirelessly to protect America’s Interests abroad, especially in Trade and Immigration.
Congratulations Melinda!”
She and her billionaire spouse, Jeff Hildebrand, were significant financial supporters, donating almost $800,000 to his campaign in April 2024, followed by an additional $400,000 in October.
The Hildebrands launched River Oaks Donuts in 2013, quickly earning recognition as Houston’s top donut destination. “I simply wanted to bring donuts to the neighborhood,” Melinda Hildebrand explained at the time. “There was a demand, and we aimed to fulfill it.”
In addition to her work in the donut business, Hildebrand holds the position of vice president at her husband’s company, Hilcorp Ventures. Hilcorp is one of the largest privately owned oil firms in the U.S. and has operations in several states, including Alaska. Trump recently signed an executive order that would expand drilling and mining in the state, despite ongoing environmental concerns.
