It’s been a week full of victory laps from conservative media, personalities and politicians alike as the Mueller report echoes what they’ve been saying for two long years; there was no collusion. Rightfully so as it’s been one of the biggest hindrances to President Trump’s time in the Oval Office. Every week it felt like something new came out that indicated a hammer was coming down on the president and an impeachment decision would be coming.
A lot of prominent figures on the left had been banking on this to remove the president that has been wrapped in other controversies also. There have been several occasions that resolutions, were brought up (and shot down) declaring the president unfit for office and called for his resignation immediately. The most recent attempt being one filed on Wednesday by Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).
It became a rallying cry from those determined to undermine President Trump’s authority. Before Mueller concluded his investigation, a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University showed that 64 percent of people interviewed believed that president Trump committed crimes before the election. Another 45 percent believed he committed crimes while in office. Now those that believed Trump was guilty of conspiring with Russian officials to turn the 2016 election in his favor have a “yuge” pill to swallow that they may not want to.
Donald Trump is innocent – to an extent.
This decision coming from Attorney General William Barr’s letter that he sent to the House Judiciary Committee investigating the matter, quoting the report directly:
“[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”
While this does vindicate the president that he was innocent (to an extent), this investigation wasn’t a total loss and there seems to be more questions than answers right now. For instance, there have been 34 indictments including three Russian companies. The investigation also issued around 2,800 subpoenas and interviewed 500 witnesses during the matter. All of this has caused democrats to ask, if all of this happened then how is he innocent?
Now a fight has begun to get the full version released for the American public. A device the left will no doubt use to launch their own investigations in the 2016 election and President Trump. Democrats, like Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY) have already raised questions about Barr and his qualifications to make a judgement on the report. Many, like Nadler, believe that Barr got his job as attorney general after he wrote and sent a memo that stated his belief that a sitting president could not be indicted on obstruction of justice charges.
But is any of this worth it?
STORY CONTINUES BELOW...
When the democrats do conduct their own probes into President Trump, it could back fire. They could risk losing the 2020 election because they drag this probe out, even after it’s been decided that President Trump is innocent (to an extent).
Think about it.
A poll conducted by CNN, before the investigation ended showed that while issues like global warming were prominent for voters in the 2020 election, zero percent of those interviewed said that the Mueller investigation would affect their decision. Goose egg, not even the voter’s the democrats need to remove Trump from office care about this investigation that much.
On top of that, this investigation was never going to sway Trump’s base, he has a 90 percent approval rating within his party. The president’s fan base stans him harder than Beyoncé and her fan base. The only difference between the two is that while one sings about Becky with the good hair, the other one is grabbing her by the p***y.
This can also give republicans who rally around president enough ammunition to run a campaign targeting those in the middle (who have been sorely neglected) to sway their opinion of who ever runs for election.
In a recent poll conducted by USA Today, 80 percent of people believed that President Trump was subjected to longer and harsher investigations than most presidents. A witch hunt, to use the words of the president and his supporters. While some are criticizing that poll for asking a question that was too broad, if that data is accurate it poses a serious threat to the democratic party.
It’s been the democrats that have driven this investigation forward. Lawmakers like Representative Adam Schiff, the head of the House Intelligence Committee, stated that they had damning evidence against the president. Schiff now faces the threat of resignation because of this. They hyped this report harder than Kanye West hyped up the president and it worked.
People are so obsessed with this investigation that there has been podcasts started about it. Someone, and I’m not kidding about this, even got a tattoo of Robert Mueller on his back. So, the American public will start to feel deceived and let down by the democrats the longer this drags out. This will no doubt sway public opinion in favor of republican rule of the government.
Of course, some politicians like Chuck Schumer have reversed course and stated that their focus was always on the issues their base cares about. Which is good because this does give democrats the ability to court plenty of voters outside of their base.
It should also be noted that many democrats are waiting for the full release of the report before they make any decisions based on it. Congress has given Barr a deadline of April 2nd to release the full version of the report which he may miss. But either way, the long-term damage of this report will start to set in and take affect on potential voters in the 2020 election if nothing substantial is found.
The democrats lied to us.
I would like to point out that while all of this is going on and the fallout continues from this report, there’s another part of Barr’s letter that many on the right seem to have neglected:
“…while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”
This investigation doesn’t exonerate him from obstructing justice when he fired former F.B.I. Director James Comey. There is still plenty of things that are being investigated about President Trump and his business dealings. In fact, there are still ongoing investigations into:
-Shady real estate deals
-Payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen Mcdougal
-Trump’s Taxes and the Trump Foundation
Despite this, the democrats in charge of investigating President Trump now must walk an extremely thin line covered in egg shells on a cracked bed of ice if they want to proceed. A lengthy investigation after the fact, mixed with Trump’s ability to control the media cycle could make contending for the 2020 election more difficult. They need something actually damning, a smoking gun, to justify dragging this out.
Otherwise, it’s starting to look like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi might have a point about attempting to impeach the president.
It’s just not worth it.
